Another fuel filter Problem
 
I changed the fuel filter in my 6.2L M1009. I read every post on the web about how to do it. I filled the filter first, opened the valve on top of filter to prime, disconnected the pink wire, cranked it until diesel came out, the closed valve, attached pink wire and cranked again... Nothing. Then I cracked every injector. Still nothing. Three battery charges later, the muffler smokes, but doesn't start. Before the filter change it cranked like a champ on the first turn. What am I missing? Please help. I know this topic has been on before, but I tried everything I read but it doesn't work. Looking for ideas. Thanks

Check for fuel at the injectors while cranking.
Did you use some engine oil on the gasket of the new filter?
Air leaks will give you a major headache. If there is a rubber gasket at the filter assy- did you replace it with a new one?
It's a must to do so!
Do you have a magnetic fuel lock? If so check for the clicking sound of the actuated magnet.
A picture(s) of the IP and the fuel filter assy would be helpful.

Fuel filter problem
 
When I cracked the injectors, I had fuel at every one. The filter is a metal rectangle box on the passenger firewall. I have not used any oil on the gaskets. Where would magnet be located?

it is an electro magnet consisting of a coil and a metal plunger . In the Injection pump. It is the fuel shut off.

You had fuel squirting out while cranking?(be care careful- it will penetrate your skin with ease and poisioning you!)- Thats ok!
Or fuel only drippin' out?

The gaskets must be oiled - otherwise air can get in with ease. This is one common major fault while replacing the filter. Hopefully new gaskets or did you reuse the old ones??

Ok, I took the filter off again. There are rubber rings around each port. I put oil on each one. Filled the filter with clean diesel the best I could. Some poured out trying to put it back in. Primed as usual. Still nothing. I have attached pictures of the filter and pump. Let me know if you have any other ideas about getting the air out. Thanks for the quick response.

Do you have replaced the sealing rubbers with new ones?
Had the same problem- turned out the "used" seals were leaking air once I opened them.
Make sure the fuel hoses and clamps are still tight, if necessary replace both of them.

If done with priming, crank the engine, open the fuel line until only fuel comes out.
repeat with all fuel lines.

Tip: You can use a vaccum brake bleeder pump to fill the fuel filter.I do it in this way!
Otherwise it would take forever(and several battery charges) to get fuel into the filter!

That wouldn't happen to be a wix filter would it? I had the same problem a while back and it turned out that the holes dont line up and cause a major air leak. The filters said made in Taiwan and since then ive switched to anything but wix on that particular application.

The filter is Purolator. The rubber rings are built into the filter so they are new. I had someone else crank the motor while I watched one injector that was cracked. I saw bubbles coming out with each 10 second crank. Will it eventually stop bubbling? I cranked it about 25 times and still bubbles. Other injectors I cracked just dripped fuel. Should I continue to crank until bubbles are gone? Or is there something else I should do. I also invested in a battery charger because I am wearing them out like crazy.
