i need help with a swap

Hey everyone! new to the page today and have a couple of questions. First off i've never owned a diesel before (been obsessed my whole life though) anyway so i bought this old chevy to start working on has a sbc 350 and i was gonna rebuild it but thought why not put a 6.2 in it i've always wanted one but cant get a new one. So i got this 1980 chevy custom deluxe 3/4 ton 4x4 4 spd granny low :scare2: its still mainly stock except for the spring pack in the rear and custom bumper/air tank/tow hitch/ on the flatbed. So anyway why i am here is i love diesel and a diesel lover needs diesel to survive so what would i need to do to make this truck ready to drop in a diesel. I'm wanting an old 6.2, they're simple they and sound good. Also if anybody knows a lot about these motors what kind of mods can i do? Cam, headers, exhaust, intake, fuel delivery?? Thanks to anyone ahead of time i appreciate the help as i am stoked about this project:rocking: forgot to mention got the whole truck for $300

Welcome to the 6.2 world. The swap would be simple, but there is a bit of finesse. IIRC, the flywheel has to be diesel specific, and you'll want good fuel filtration and water separation. If you live in the north you'll also want fuel heating. All this can be accomplished with a working model 80 fuel heater/filter/water separator, found on most 80's 6.2s. When the time comes, get up with me on the wiring for it. Also, the 6.2 requires only one hot wire while running, the pink lead to the top of the IP. The motor mounts may be different, I'll get back to you on that. As for upgrades, no AM cams, fuel delivery can be tweaked (google "turning up fuel on a 6.2"), and as for the headers/intake/exhaust.... turbo the beast. You'll get better throttle response, acceleration, and even economy. Plus, most of the parts will just about bolt on. And also, congrats on a great deal.

The motor mounts are the same and trans bolt pattern is the same. You will need the radiator, fuel filters, and a glow plug relay. Its a fairly easy swap to put a 6.2 in one.

That sounds pretty easy. I cant wait to find a motor. Will the block heater from the 350 that's in it work on the 6.2, also what about the fuel tank/pump/fill tube none of that has to be changed?? Ive also seen a button on the left side of the dash as a glow plug warmer, will i have to wire that up or can it be wired through the ignition? I think I'll stay away from turbo's unless i could find one at a junkyard i could rebuild and make work, but prolly not. Nothing against turbo's i think they're great when they're real loud and whistling but i like the chunky tractor sound on the older trucks. One last thing for now anyway what would be the biggest stack i could run on a 6.2 without taking away to much power? I would like to run something around a 5" bull hauler.

Well its to bad your not closer to me id give you a complete motor and every thing you need ,glow plug relay, triple core rad the whole 9 yards.I have a complete 1993 chev 4x4 with a 6.2 thats just sitting in my yard waiting to get crushed after im done taking the interior and a few other parts i need but the motor is useless to me,,good luck.

HeavychevY80 12-30-2010 10:26 PM

you can just run it on down here to southern indiana for me i wouldn't mind, just drop it off in my yard and ill take care of it. To bad you are that far away. If i had a way to come get it i prolly would i doubt i would ever find one for nothin. I wish there was an easy way to ship it. I guess i can say i appreciate it and thanks anyway for being willing to give something like that away. Here's to you:c:

You are quit welcome, the motor is noe missing the OPS and glow plg relay but havent used the relay yet,,ya its to bad its so far cause im serious id give it away has ill never use it and no one up here uses them any more.Ihas less than 300,000 klm /186,000 miles on her and was the best running truck ive ever owned its just the body feel off it,my fault for not oiling it every yr.

Where about are you from in Indiana? I am close to Evansville and might be able to help you find a 6.2.

HeavychevY80 01-01-2011 10:27 PM

I am from Mt. Vernon which is about 16 miles west of Evansville. How close to Evansville are you? That would be great if you could help me find a 6.2 that ran, and for fairly cheap would be great to.

Your not to far from me then I am about half way Wadesville and Poseyville. I know where a couple of them are now and will see if they will part with them and at what price.
