93 vs 97 6.5 turbo diesel swap
 

I have a 1993 6.5 turbo in a k2500 that has a good engine and a 1997 3500HD that has a 6.5 turbo that has a bad engine, will they swap and is the performance the same. The 97 truck is in really good shape and i would like to keep it, but rebuilt engines are too expensive. any thoughts thanks.

i think it work but what i here is that 97 turbo is better of the two

i think that the 93 is a later model like a 94 it has a filter on top of the intake and a electric pump instead of a mechanical not sure but i have read that the 92 and the 93 had a mechanical pump and the filter located on the firewall. i have heard that the 94 is the same as the 97 hoping the same will apply for my 93

the only thing i know of was EGR on top intake

They will swap. You will need to change the injection pump to the ds4 pump that is on the 97. The only real externals that where changed was the injection pump, water pump and thermostat housing, location of the oil pressure sensors, and possible the oil cooler line sizes but I cant remember. One added plus is the 93 has a stronger block than the 97. If it was me I would keep the newer cooling system and turbo.

thanks for the input im going to pull the 97 engine this week and tear it down and find out whats wrong it has a slight knock on one cylinder but runs ok and a little smoke but still worried i dont want to blow the engine. it has good oil pressure but something is for sure wrong we replaced the injector but did not help

Yes, it will work perfectly. You will need the front cover off the new motor, and you must replace the timing chain and reluctor from the old motor to a newer timing set so the crankshaft sensor has a place to go, and something to sense.

I just did this swap, using a late model 6.2 longblock.

PS, runs great.
