Ignition switch wiring help please...

Hello Forum;

I am new to the site, and want to thank everyone who welcomed me yesterday.

I have been tracking down a 3 amp draw on the start batteries of my motor-home which has a 1983 Chevy P30 Forward Control chassis and a 6.2 liter diesel engine. The draw is not from any coach appliance or component. I have narrowed it down to the last two component's of the starting and charging circuits that I haven't replaced in the last couple of months, namely the ignition switch and the starter solenoid. I purchased both OEM replacements and they are ready to be installed starting with the ignition switch hoping that will do the trick and I won't have to replace the solenoid.

I removed the old switch, however I am looking to install a custom start panel with 3 position key-lock, push-button start, aircraft style toggle switches with protectors and so on.

The problem is I don't have a wiring schematic that identifies the individual wires in the ignition switch connector and harness. There are 3 pairs of blade contacts (bat; G-1 & G-2; Acc & Sol) and one single (Ign) on the switch, but before I make too many assumptions about what wire goes where, I have learned the hard way to check the conductors' paths first.

I have a Haynes manual for the 6.2 liter diesel, but there are no wiring diagrams included, nor have I found anything on the internet. So I am hopeful somebody will be able to help me out either with a schematic or wiring diagram, or with instructions.

Thanks in advance for any comments, suggestions or remarks.

Thanks for the reply.

The problem isn't so much engine oriented, rather it's dashboard electrical oriented. I would imagine that GM used the same ignition switches and wiring plans for many different applications over many different model years - it's finding the right application that's difficult.

Hopefully some compassionate person will rescue me and my motor-home from this ignorant position or else shoot me and put me out of my misery!

Ignition Switch 82' 6.2L

Did you ever find the schematics for the wiring to the ignition switch for your truck? I have run in to the same problem, I can not find the schematics for any of the electrical things within the cab. I have replaced the ignition switch but cannot find where the L rod that comes from the key ignition connects to the switch. I am not getting any power what so ever now either. Any clues for me?

Very Respectfully,
Thomas

crazy;

I replaced the ignition switch with a new one, but I do not have the new batteries installed yet so I don't know if the draw is still there or not.

Thanks for the info.

ThomasL;

Sorry, but I haven't found much to do with the ignition switch wiring. Mine is a dash mount, not a column mount like yours. However, in my research on the internet I came across many sites that dealt with column mounted switches. Google "ignition switch schematic" and you should get thousands of hits. Also, try Google "Images" with same keywords.

Good luck!
