simple fix? 6.2 dies at idle

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have an 85 6.2 suburban. No turbo, mechanical fuel pump. Two problems. One, it dies at idle long after it is warmed up. Skips a beat at idle sometimes. Filter cartridge replace 10k ago. Second problem seems harder, after a normal start and run in the morning If it sits for an hour, it starts, runs crappy, then dies. :booo: Almost impossible to get it started then. I have to squirt starting fluid into the intake and floor it, :argh: It slugisly comes to life acting like it is flooded. Once it reves up, runs normal. I put in a manual glow plug switch which I almost always use, doens't help on the hard start. Starts right up after an idle stop, and runs fine. :U: I am thinking of bypassing the mechanical fuel pump with an electric one. Can I use any pump? Is there sucha a thing as too much pressure? Do you think that will fix the hard starting problema nd idel problem? Thanks, nothing like asking the people who know.

I'll get some pictures on how to rig up an electric in the morning. 5-7 psi is all that's needed. I'll post some more info later on. :U:

Now that I'm not all drowsy, an electric fuel pump is the way to go. Run some rubber fuel line from the outlet on the water/fuel separator to the inlet on the fuel pump. Then from the outlet on the fuel pump to the inlet on the secondary filter. Your also going to need some brass fittings, what type I can't remember. Also the steel line coming off the secondary, mark it 6" from the bend, completely remove the line and cut where you made the mark. Then it's just a matter of repriming the filters. :U:

Your also going to have to get a fuel pump blank and remove the mechanical from the engine. There will be a short steel bar behind the pump that also needs to be removed.
