Troubleshoot 1993 6.5L Fuel Pump/Canister

1993 6.5L Turbo
300K miles
Injector pumps replaced

I can bleed air from the fuel filter canister once --- ONCE

After I close the canister it will run for 10min and shut down. If I try to bleed off any more while running the air/fuel the canister runs dry and will not prime.

The pump otherwise seems to push good fuel. Not really sure where to start trouble-shooting -- the pump (seems fine), tank, lines? Any ideas ?

Need to get it back to work :hellox: first post

if you open the bleeder and it runs dry your lift pump is either bad or not getting power/ground. no way around it.

With a 93 we are talking "mature iron" :)

Put 12V direct to the lift pump make it run, put a pressure gauge on the filter manager drain line ,common vac/pressure test gage about $20 or so at most part stores open drain tee and watch pressure, should run to 7-10 psi and switch off, internal regulator inside the pump will switch it off, this eliminates any power/gnd issues.

Now if it doesn't come to pressure or it si slow to build then it could be the pump, could also be plugged sock inside the tank or rotten steel or rubber lines from the tank remember this is a 93 we are taling about, if sucking air then that will shut you down as well.

A healthy IP should be able to pull it's own fuel thru an OEM style lift pump, if it can't I suspect you have some air leakage in the lines, or MAJOR blockage in the tank sock, that sock does have a bypass in it if it is still factory Diesel sock if somebody put a gasser sock in it then it won't have a bypass. That bypass it there in event of extremely cold weather to allow some fuel to get to the IP if there is gelling of the fuel over the socks 70 micron screen it opens and you can still get fuel thru it and the the heater in the FFM can pre-heat fuel before it gets to the IP
