6.5 turbo diesel No pulling power
I have a 1994 6.5 diesel that I just bought pull my camper that weighs 9500 pounds . When I'm pulling it up hills I cannot maintain power if not I lose power decreasing in miles per hour rapidly sometimes down to 30 miles an hour before I Top the hill . Engine has new injectors has a new gasket between the turbo that was losing air as a new air filter and replaced and all sensor tying into the fuel pump . We cannot figure out why I have no pulling power it runs fine down the highway ? I need help to know if this can be fixed or if I need to get rid of this truck and find another one . Should also mention first time diesel buyer so I have no clue

I know the 94's have problems with the factory air box. Something about the snorkel in the fender restricting flow. I haven't had to deal with one myself but it might be something to look into.
I assume with the amount of work you have done that you have checked fuel pressure and proper lift pump operation. If not that would be the first and easiest step. I'm not a turbo expert but I think you really need a boost and pyro gauges to monitor while pulling those hills. Lack of boost or defueling could be the problem. |
Does it spew excessive black smoke when struggling?

Lift pump is good, and no black smoke or white smoke . Anyone think changing the ECM will do anything , not sure if they go bad .

If you are pulling a 9500 lb camper with a truck that heavy (that has less than 200 HP) then yeah, you are going to lose speed going up a hill. A lot of speed. Might not be anything wrong.
You might need a stronger truck, or mod the one you have with a tow performance package. You could put a boost gauge in to make sure the turbo's doing the work right. |

Might be a loose wire somewhere. Check the alternator and battery cables.
