Tow in 3rd. Its easier on the internals and creates alot less heat.

Yep, I second that! Just watch your speed so you dont wind it up too much. cheers :c:

thanks guys I was thinking the same......it's mostly a one way trip but it's 900 miles. :yessir:

I'd tow in 4 unless the trans
starts "hunting"
between 4 and 3 while cruising.
In that case I'd leave it in 3.

Also, no such 3.5 gear I know
of in a cheby, only 3.42 or 3.73 for those
starting with a 3 anyway

sjslhill 04-21-2015 06:58 PM

woops

I think it's a 3.73, I need to look. So, you think D is okay. I think you might be right when it's level.

thanks,
Steve

I would agree. I have a 4l80 (3:73 rear end)with 180,000 hard miles on it. I've never kept it out of 4th unless going up hills or excessive wind etc.
Probably need to feel it out and see how your truck handles the weight.

Bigg Redd 04-22-2015 02:47 PM

If ya have 3.73, then you will be fine towing in D on flat hwy, unless you are in heavy winds, mountain range, or steep grades, in which case 3 will work better with less stress. You wont be breaking any speed records, thats for sure. Keep an eye on your trans temps and EGTs.
