94 6.5td timing out of range

I put new rings/bearings in the motor about 150mi ago. Took it to the mechanic today to have the timing and tdco set (he specializes in diesels and has a tech 2) the problem he is encountering and cant figure out is no matter what direction he turns the pump he cant get it within +2/-2 to set the timing. He said it is erratic. The motor was reassembled correctly and the timing marks were lined up so it sounds like an electronic issue. Also i removed the line filter to the ip and the crank shaft sensor is new too. Any ideas what could be causing this?

I have had an issue with the crankshaft position sensor and got this information from the site below, which I will be going over this weekend. It is probably an electrical issue and this diagnostic sheet I hope helps to go through. It may be of some help if the mechanic is having such issues.

Code P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums

Hope it helps,
Ron

AC Delco ONLY for CPS replacement-BWD are usually bad right out of the box.

Also when you remove the noise filter on a 94 you need to fasten ferrite core from radio shack around each OS harness wire to absorb the RF noise generated by the OS so the ECM does not get interference.

On this issue racer 55, the 6.5 TD 1998 gmc k series truck I drive will do two things. The first is when sitting at a light and it does a hick up and wants to lurch forward. Then if I start it up the engine makes a noise that is more like a tinny sloshing sound. If I shut it off and start it again it will run great for a few days and then it will do this again. When it is running bad it will smoke more, although gray and not black. This is when I get the P0335 crankshaft position sensor code.
Would I be best to replace the sensor or check it out as in the diagnostic to check ohm-age and voltage?

You have the symptoms of a bad flight systems PMD.
You also have the CPS symptoms but check wiring first-the free things always need done first.

Thanks for replying. I just put in a new PMD, which had a #5 resistor, with a #9 resister. I will be checking out the wiring of the CPS this week.
