No power pulling my trailer

I have been fighting this truck since I bought it last summer. First trip I blew out the brake line, second trip I lost the vacuum pump, and now, I have no power pulling down the highway.

Pulling a 28 foot camper (5800 lbs) on the highway, I had the service engine light come on after about 5 miles. Once the light came on, I had no excelleration. Keeping my foot on the floor, it would top out at about 60 mph on the flats, any slight hill would drop my speed until I reached the peak and then it would pick up again until the next hill.

I took it into the dealership to have it checked out (also because I lost the engine temp gauge on this trip) and they said that the scanner did not find a code, and all systems were operating normally. Without the trailer it runs fine. Boost is normal, lift pump is good, IP is good.

Any thoughts. I bought this truck for the specific purpose of pulling the trailer. I have already replaced the PMD, Wastegate actuator, vacuum pump, wastegate solenoid and fuel filter.

Looking for any suggestions on where to go next.

Thanks.

Whats fuel pressure like? Possible restriction due too clogged sock in tank?

Suburban Coal Burner 07-19-2014 01:40 PM

Dealership said that the fuel pressure was good, did not give me the actual reading. Only happens when pulling the trailer. I literally kept my foot to the floor. engine turning at 3000 rpm at 60mph. As I got to a hill, I would lose speed and rpm would drop.

Sounds like going into limp mode due to static timing off id do a tdc relearn procedure on it u can download program an do it with laptop or dealership can do it.

Check again for codes, something set. When it bogged down was their any black smoke? Boost levels loaded and unloaded? Do you have huge tires and stock gearing? Soot trap/exhaust plugged?

No black smoke. don't have a boost gage on it yet. Stock tires and gears. No soot trap and exhaust clear.

I will check again for codes, but I find it annoying that it only happens when I am towing my trailer. Starting to think there is something wrong with the trailer wiring, as it did nasty things to my 3/4 ton Dodge van with a 5.9 too. Kept having engine problems with that and getting 3 mpg after the service engine light would come on.

Try pulling it near home without electrical hooked up?
Beware that no electric brakes makes for longer stops and do it in daylight on a seldom used road if possible.

Or go through the wiring and be sure it is connected in the standard manner on both truck and trailer:

I will try taking it out (need to wash the trailer anyway) without hooking up wiring and have the wife follow in the car. Just need to deal with a newly developed fuel leak.

Fuel leak was a rusted out tank. Replaced tank and sending unit. Took the trailer out last weekend and it ran fine on surface roads for 40 miles, then the service engine light came back on, and I was back to limp mode. Checking for codes, it only shows vacuum solenoid, that I already replaced and I know the turbo is operating correctly. May have to break down and hand off to the dealer.

Post the code here.
