Won't start. NEED help
I have a 1990 GMC Jimmy 6.2 automatic, Banks turbo kit, 265000 miles. It is sitting in the yard since I took the interior out to fix floors about 3 months ago. I have been starting it about every 2 weeks or so to drive it around the yard to keep all the juices flowing.
Friday night it wouldn't start, it would start for about 2 seconds and die. Thought maybe it was out of fuel. Got 5 gallons of fuel, cranked it and bled the filter. Still no start. Just cranks and doesn't even try now. Glow plugs are working, block heater was plugged in. Not being a diesel man I listened to my son (never again) and shot it with ether. Sounded like somebody dropped a rock in a cylinder. Everything still works and the starter didn't fly off. But still just cranks. Took a wrench and loosed the only injector I could get to and cranked the engine. Took a while (10 or so seconds) for fuel to come out and when it did it was just a trickle. I it my understanding that these things use some rather substantial fuel pressure to operate the injectors. I would expect it to squirt out a good bit. Any assistance would be appreciated. Yes it is acceptable to call me a moron for the ether.:argh::argh: |
I'm not real familiar with the 6.2. Just bought my first, but have you checked for sufficient fuel pressure to the IP? Could be a clogged filter, bad lift pump, drawing air.

Sounds like a air leak in the fuel system put a piece of clear fuel rated hose and replace the one going into the IP this is very helpful to see air in the sytem

Could be a waxed up fuel filter. Also could be a short or rub-through on the wires going to the crankshaft position sensor. NEVER US ETHER ON ANY GLOW PLUG ENGINE! Hope somebody comes up with a solution for ya.

To the OP the injectors use high pressure to pop but the flow is much less than you would expect. I agree that air or a weak/dead lift pump or combination of the 2 is the best place to start your search. |
Thanks for the input. Just made a tool that should let me bleed the all the injector but the one under the a/c compressor.
Charging the batts, and jump box now. Will change the filter and probably put a lift pump on it this weekend and post results.:humm: |
Injectors are self bleeding-if it starts you don't need to bleed the injectors.
Air in the fuel usually comes from a leaky line or fitting between the lift pump amd the fuel level in the tank. |
