6.5 vacuum pump failures

The vacuum pump on our 6.5 turbo failed hence loss of power, heaps of black smoke and no turbo boost. Fitted a new (genuine) vacuum pump (about 3 hours work) and this fixed all the problems with boost running back up to 11 psi and a steady 5 psi on cruise. All great I thought until 1500 klm later the new pump fails and we are now back to the same problem. Checked all the lines etc. Hooked up an electric vacuum pump on suction side of waste gate solenoid valve and turbo works fine again. Do these belt driven pumps have a tendency to fail and if so could such failure be heat related as we also have cooling problems on big climbs?

I would go back to who ever you got the replacement from and raise some hell. :axe:

The china pumps fail quick-I would stick with AC Delco/GM vac pump.

I had to change the vac pump on both of my 6.5's .It is a pain that they don't sell just the top end diaphragm portion that fails. It is just to easy to replace the top instead of fighting with changing the pulley.
I ruined 1 body trying to get the old pulley off, so when truck #2 needed a vac pump I took the top end off the one I messed up and bolted it to the body of the one that failed. Does any place sell just the top portion of these pumps?

Advance Auto parts sells just the top of the pump but I would not recommend using it! The pulley is very easy to remove with the correct puller/installer. I swapped my pulley in less than 5 mins
