1994 6.5 turbo diesel starting problem

I have a 94 chevy 2500 with a 6.5 turbo diesel, i ought it at 200k and have put 40k on it, all i've done is regular maintenance like oil changes and air filters, haven't replaced the fuel filter in fear of breaking a line, because it's really rusty. now it's been starting and running fine, now i live in NY it's been 20 degrees or colder the last month and it has no problems starting up until these last couple of days. i haven't done any modifications or upgrades to it. it's completely stock. If i prime it 6-7 times before turning the key all the way forward it'll start… so far. i'm thinking maybe the fuel pump ??. but before i go replace that and maybe still have the same problem i thought i'd ask for other peoples opinions.

fuel filter is on top of the engine near the fire wall made out of black plastic the filter thing with wires coming out of it on the frame is the lift pump(LP)if you run 12v to the G terminal on the ALDL1 port will make the LP power up first open T-valve or fuel filter housing this will eliminate the LP use a heavy wire from the positive terminal from your battery

random shut off while driving ?

ok, i changed my fuel filter and she is starting up fine and idle fine, i let it idle for about 30 minutes lettin it warm up. shut it off then tried to start it again and it started just fine, but now i have another problem. it's happened twice today. i'll be driving down the road and it will randomly shut off, it doesn't make any wierd noises or stutter, it just shuts off, i pull her to the side of the road toss her in park, turn the key wait a second for the plugs to warm and then start it and she'll start right up, then 4 minutes down the road it shut off again. did the same thing and it started up, and made it the other 5 minutes home... :humm:

usually my process is to just replace things until it runs good again, but i don't have the money right now. and i haven't had any problems with this truck until just recently. it's got 242900 miles on it.
