Harmonic balancer when to change? 6.5 218k
Well I have heard to change this about now because of my mileage... Why? How do I know? Can I tell by the way it runs? Should I be looking for a physical defect?
Thanks |
Rubber in the Center the HB of will dryrot and fail causing one heck of a clatter under the hood when it fails I see that you truck is going on 16+years old I would say its its time I did both of my 6.5s shortly after buying them just to have peice of mind

The balancer will show bad/cracked or missing rubber between the hub and outer ring and if you see the ring has moved fore or aft frm the hub its junk.
The frt drive pulley being of similar construction will fail even more obviously, the center will seperate from the outer pulley and there will be marks where the webbing hits the hub mounting bolts. The 2 should be replaced as a pair, but the pulley tends to fail more often and can be changed alone if the balancer is ok. AC Delco or Powerbond are the 2 quality replacement options-Dorman is junk. |
the pulley is a relatively cheep and easy part to replace I have had to replace mine. If I remember its about :hellox:a $40 part mine was just thee pulley my balancer was still good

I run Fluidampers on everything

I changed mine on my 1992 6.2 van. 240000 on it and the rubber started to look rough. The pulley looked fine. I used a pioneer replacement. I think it was around $85.
