Lets talk about the DB2(and why mines failing)

OK, its been a while since Ive been on.I have 1985 Burb with 6.2 Aprox. 240,000....I ran some motor oil a while back and it caused all sort of problems so I cleaned/flushed everything and Ive been running regular D2. After all my issues someone said "try to advance your timing a little and see how it runs".Voila! It ran like new.Well a couple months went by and it slowly got sluggish again and starting smoking a little...a bit more advance and BAM! Like new again.Ive repeated this process several times and now the inevitable day has come that Im fully advanced and cant advance anymore but my sluggish/smoking issue has returned and of course is accompanied by the gas mileage cut in half....So what is it in my pump slowly going bad? Is it my pump or am I just compensating for faulty injectors with slowly worsening spray patterns? Does advancing affect anything else? Couldnt I essentially grind my bolt holes a hair for another degree or two of advance? Im in school full time and on a "hope I can afford the fuel to make it to class all week budget" however,I am top in my class in the Mechanical Engineering program and have access to a full shop at school. So spare me the advice to buy a new one or have mine rebuilt.I will rebuild it if it comes to that.I have the manuals and am more than capable. So lets skip the obvious replace/rebuild and discuss my questions please. Thanks in advance to anyone with a couple cents.

Do you have any no hot start symptoms and how old are the injectors over a hundred thousand miles have injectors rebuilt and or replace and I run a half ounce of synthetic outboard 2 stroke oil per gallon as a lube for my IP good luck

As far as I know the injectors are the original. So well over 100,000.I run Diesel additive (Diesel kleen or something) Every time I fill up and I also add a little 2 stroke for lubricity. It has a little trouble with cold starts (pretty sure most or all of my glow plugs are shot but I live in the south so it doesnt get cold thus, I havent messed with them)but, hot starts flawlessly. Its starts and runs great its just that if I punch it or I try to pass on the interstate I get alot of smoke and it bogs down.It usually doesnt smoke at all.Im not sure what this is but I do know that everytime it came back another degree of advance solved it....So I have heard I need a new IP and also that I could be compensating for worsening injectors....:s:

My birthday is in a few weeks so maybe if I leave this thread open on my computer and mention that injectors are fairly cheap compared to IPs my wife or dog will notice and get them for my birthday.....

Might want to check the timing chain?
They seldom fail but can be getting well worn on a high mileage engine?

Also a reputable IP shop might check your mechanical advance-I have had little experiance with the DB2 in the last 20 years so can't direct DIY.

Have the injection pump rebuilt, runs about 200 -300 bucks, the modern ultra low diesel fuel sold these days does not have enough lube in it. These pumps are built like tanks but will eventually need to be rebuilt.(upgraded with hardened steel parts which will handle the new fuel..you will notice a massive difference in power a:c:lso.

Even the new parts are not able to tolerate ULSD -some form of lubricity additive is still required.

Fuel conditioner with lubricity additive and/or 0 ash marine 2 cycle outboard oil at a ratio of 1-200.

I agree

X 2 to the max.:pca1:

ULSD kills the pumps on our engines my bud had a 6.5 with 485K on it from the factory he ran 2stroke oil thru his fuel he went a little heavier on his mix but after seeing what work horse these diesels were compared to a gas burner of any make made me a convert:tu:but he told me 2 strke oil was the life blood for the 6.5
