99 6.5 starting problems
I brought home a 99 burb last week with a 6.5, 96,000 miles.
does not run. No smoke when cranking, been sitting x number of years, the x being unknown. I know these things are prone to PMD failures. I was told that it has a bad engine, but I would really like to get it fired up and see for myself. I do have access to a known good PMD. Tomorrow after work I'll check fuel delivery, I all ready know the lift pump runs and puts fuel out the bleeder on the filter. I guess the ten dollar question is what would you check first. Where would you go from there? If you abbreviate something, please explain it. Took me 30 minutes to figure out OPS was the oil pressure switch:w2: |
Sounds like a good score to me 96K I doubt the engine is bad make sure you have 2 good batteries and use the known good PMD is where I would start if thats the trouble do a relocate for the PMD behind the front bumper and completely out of the engine compartment Good luck :tu:P.S. check all grounds especialy the one from rear passenger head to the body

I had a similar problem with the same truck. I changed the glow plugs. I read somewhere that as long as there was one working plug it would start. Mine was starting but then shutting off. I just did this today so we can see how it goes but so far so good. |
1 good glow plug is not enough on these engines even in the summer time from a cold start.

Swapped out the PMD, no start
cleaned the grounds, new batteries, new cable ends on the cables. new fuel filter. Lift pump is working. Cracked the injector lines, very small amount of fuel when cranking, does not spurt out like it does on my 6.2 or any of the diesel tractors I own. My guess is it's not turning the fuel on some where. BUT WHERE!!! Checked the shut off that sticks up on the driver side of the injection pump. It works. Still need to check, OPS. I'm assuming it has 2 or possibly three wires on it. If its 2 I'm assuming jumping it with a paper clip will bypass it. Read some where else about a crank sensor and a cam sensor, where are they located? |
If you are getting a small dribble of fuel from the injectors you are probably ok there-make sure the glow plugs are working.
Is there any smoke from the exhaust while cranking with the injector lines tight? Have you drained any water from the water drain line? The OPS is seldom a concern with 96+ trucks. Make sure that the PMD/IP harness ground is located on the IP ONLY or drivers side battery ground-not the intake mounted heatsink if equipped. |
Glow plugs show that they are cycling, as to actually working I'll have to check.
No smoke. No water It is on the IP, but why only there? My experience with non electronic diesels tells me there isn't enough fuel pressure at the injector. What fuel there is does not spurt out, I just kind of dribbles. |
Might want to remove the IP fuel inlet assembly and clean itr-there are 2 screens in it that have been known to get plugged.
The ground should be on the IP only for best performance-less resistance from dissimilar metals corrosion. |

Yea know the feeling,just got second cut hay baled up before 90% chance of rain tomorrow-even got it dry with no rain!
Still have to draw in straw and now more hay. |
