Looking To Buy A Truck

I'm in the market for a truck right now and I would like it to be a Chevy with the 6.5, probably after 96 for the newer interior but I'm still in school so I can't spend too much. Probably in the $7-9000 range. I've been looking around auto trader at some trucks and I was wondering if anyone on here has ever bought a truck that was really far away from them and how they went about it. I ask this because most trucks up here in New England that age have a considerable amount of rust, which I would like to avoid. I want a daily driver not another project. I've found a couple trucks further down south that I'm interested in but I'm not really sure how to go about researching them. I don't really want to just pick one and fly down there to find there's something wrong with it or it's just not what I expected so I was thinking maybe I could find some people on here near them that could take a look at them for me. We've always had Chevy's in my family so I'm pretty set on that but also if there's anything else I should know or steer clear of please let me know. I've already read a lot on here about the PMD problems but is there anything else I should know about these trucks?

We have some guys on here that are pretty sharp on the 6.5. I don't believe anyone has made the big power with them but they're pretty decent motors. Heath Diesel makes some good stuff for them. The PMD relocator seems to be the hot item for making them more reliable.

right now I'm looking for reliability more than power, I'm not into racing them or anything I would just want it to haul around my other truck every once in a while so I think the 6.5 would be fine for a while
