6.5 intermittent loss of power

Hi guys

What a great forum! You guys have already helped me find my way around my diesel but now I am not having any luck with my latest problem and I am hoping that the vast knowledge on this site can help

I have a 97 chev 3500 with the 6.5. Lately I have found that the truck will loose most of it's power. There is no torque and a lot of black smoke is produced. The truck does not usually smoke at all. Sometimes the engine warning light comes on but I don't have a code scanner so I will be heading to a mechanic to get the codes read tomorrow.

The injection pump has been moved up onto the drivers inner wheel well

I have recently replaced the oil pressure sensor that is next to the fuel filter and the truck has a brand new fuel and air filter installed. The truck has just been serviced also.

I replaced the oil pressure sensor because the truck would die randomly and would not start until the ignition was turned off and the the truck would fire instantly.
This problem is still there but not as regular as it was before I swapped the sensor.

I am at a loss as to why the problem is so random.

The loss of power is usually when towing if that helps...

I'm looking foward to your replys and I hope I can get my truck back to the way it was

Cheers

David

Could be high IAT defuel but sounds more like loss of boost-bad wastegate solenoid or cracked leaking vac lines or weak vac pump are likely causes?

A bad boost sensor can also cause that problem.
