Peddle stoped working an cant git truck to start 6.5 turbo

I have a 96 chevy 2500
Detroit 6.5 turbo diesel
215,000 miles had it for 1 year

I was driving won day an stopped at the store left the truck running. I got back in the truck an pulled out went about 1/2 a mile. Then at that time the truck started speeding up on it's own. An I had no control over my gas peddle. An the peddle hasn't worked since. My truck just sits there and kind of lopes but it's hitting 4000 to 5000 rpm over an over again

So I changed the peddle an nothing changed. I went an bout a new PMD after that am the truck wont start at all. I would put the old won back on an it would start but would do the same as before. the old PMD would get so hot it put a burned my hand. An it gets that hot every time its running.

Now the truck wont start with the old won. It still gets vary hot when turning the key over. When it is turning over it sounds like its not getting fuel but I'm sure that the old PMD just burned up.

So now I'm lost please help need to be roiling coal again

Could be you Injection pump gone bad. I know when they switched to ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) the lubricating properties of the diesel went down and that's what kept the injection pumps cool and operating fine. I guess the ULSD is hard on the older injection pumps. The PMD is wired to it so if its not working it could be the reason the PMD is getting real hot as well. But first check all the wires running from the PMD to the IP (if its remote mounted), one of my wires was split and I was having the same problems as a broken PMD.

Good Luck!

PMD's generate heat when they operate, that's why they must be on the IP or mounted to an aluminum heatsink.

Ok I'm check all the wires. Is the ip on top of the engine where the pmd was.
Racer 55. I have the pmd move to on top of my fuse box.

Thanks for the advise guys hope I find a bad wire tomorrow. Bc I thinks the ip pumps or vary pricey.

3 Attachment(s)
The PMD MUST be mounted to an aluminum heatsink like one of these with a heat transfer pad or paste between the PMD and heatsink:

Also it is best to get a 6' PMD extension harness and mount the PMD/heatsink/resistor combo outside the engine bay so that it may maintain a constant temp.

Would that stop the new won from starting

racer55 05-11-2013 10:15 PM

It only takes about a minute of run time to burn out a PMD that can't shed it's heat from any accounts I have read.

If yours ever worked from new and you ran it for longer than that you may have cooked it?

If it did not start the truck right out of the box,you need to make sure that you have a resistor installed in the PMD connector cavity-some trucks will not run without the resistor.

Have you had the truck scanned for codes?

michael25 05-11-2013 10:28 PM

Can u rent one of them scanners. An I'm order won of them mounts for the pmd

racer55 05-11-2013 10:33 PM

Most parts stores will check for codes for free.

But not all code checkers give the right meaning for the codes reported so pay attention to the code numbers only(write them down) and then come back here to get the proper meaning.

Ok man thanks vary much
