Im new to diesels have a question

Hey all i got a 1995 chevy with a 6.5 turbo diesel. The motor in it is week. I was wondering what motor i can replace it with?

What do you mean by weak? How many miles?

CR9712v 03-29-2013 11:45 AM

6.5s are work horses. kinda limited to what you can do to it. but I wouldn't swap it?. spend the money to fix it and have a nice reliable engine. BUT if a swaps what you want of course a 6bt cummins would be the way to go. equal reliability and the simplicity is even better.

Well lot's of people do a cummins conversion, but anymore it might just be worth buying a cummins and rebuilding it and just get one where the body of the dodge is still good.

I bought the truck 2 months ago the truck ran awesome still dois but it bogs hard on hills! When i bought it i couldnt opin the hood for 2 reasons. 1 the hood was iced over and 2 the latch was stuck. When it dethoughed i finly got it opened an it has a manifold gasket leak has an oil leak at the turbo. Dont get me started on the turbo lol the wast gate is tyed opened and were is the anti freeze? Lol not in the resivor lol there is some in there the truck starts on a dime! Dosnt over heat no smoking but its week on hills. Im new to this. Im willing to learn new things and very opened to fix it if its worth it. All after market parts and pmd has been moved. Its an eye turner if i new how to post pics i would let me know what yah think i should do oh it runs cool dosnt over heat.

These motors aren't power houses, maybe you just need to melt into the peddle a little more on the hills, I have to on bigger inclines in my rig too!

Well I use to hate my pickup going up the hills. In Montana they can be pretty big, as soon as I replaced my vac pump (my old one was F.U.B.A.R) and actually got the turbo to work. I hardly slow down on hills and see little to no smoke. It's amazing how big of difference having a turbo makes, feel sorry for the 6.2 guys:tttt:. Its funny, I think I bought the pickup with a bad vac pump, probably why the guy was selling it, but just getting my turbo working almost completely changed the way I feel about these engines, now to only get my leaks to stop.

As for the bogging on hills, you might not be getting any boost. I hear these factory setups are prone to fail. You might try seeing if you're getting any vacuum to your waste gate. Just pull off the vac line and see if there is any suction, there should be plenty at idle. If not just keep following down the lines until you find suction. If not, make a mechanical waste gate and get some solid boost. Don't keep it tied opened, that doesn't work, I tried and it didn't help at all.

Were can i get a new turbo for my 6.5 at a good price?

junkyard 03-30-2013 11:50 AM

Yes, fix the wastegate. I recntly put a turbo on my 6.2 and the hills are much better now. And i got 4th gear back on the interstate after the lift and tires took that away.
