Took road trip today

Drove to Nashville to look at the 99 2500 with the 6.0L. Too much body rust for me. Reposted my ads on Craigslist. The Burb ran great - never came out of OD lock up in the mountains just watched the boost build - ain't that a beautiful thing?

6.5 for 7.4?

Got another trade offer, This is the third offer all from three different people. It is for a 97 GMC Sierra 2500 ext cab with long bed and nice tool box. SLE package. 454/auto.
167K miles. Body looks nice and straight. The wheels and tires have about 8K miles on them.

Would be trading even for my 97 K2500 Burb' with the 6.5L. I have bought some new parts for it and the seller (I just got it last August) had invested in several new parts as well. Really need the utility of a PU just do not know the history of the reliability of the 454 gas burner.

Thanks for any input!

Good engines just hard on fuel BTW same trans as your Burb

klein444 03-11-2013 04:43 PM

OK thanks...

I have to call him tonight and let him know that the Burb' may need new front hubs (4x4 not engaging) praying that that will go OK and if so then I can go look at the truck this weekend. Will also repost the add again to see what other kind of responses I may get in.

Thought the 454 should be pretty stout and figured it was going to be thirsty - but did not know that the trans was the same as the diesel. That is good to know.

Are you sure it's the hubs??these trucks gas or diesel the 4WD actuators tend to go out quite regularly and I used to have a Burb K2500 w the 454 and around town I got 8 mpg so thirsty is kind of an understatement

klein444 03-11-2013 04:57 PM

Nice!

Looks like you got a keeper there! Congratulations on the trade. I know that GOD has it under control and I like the Burb' so I am in a great position right now (not in a hurry) and would like to trade for another diesel. Even a few years older if need be to keep in the diesel family. Your success is inspiring and thanks for the pictures!

Have you had a chance to go through your new truck pretty good yet and check it out? Is it a 4X4?

Those r good trucks the fire dept I'm on has one as our brush truck its a 454 granny 4 speed 4x4 and it has never once failed us it always starts right up and will run 80 MPH+ all day long

klein444 03-12-2013 03:20 PM

That is good to hear!

I called Jimmy last night and told him that the 4X4 on the Suburban was not working right now - he did not mind. He said the 4X4 works great on his truck.

I am set to go look at his GMC 97 K2500 Sierra 454/auto on Saturday. I willl repost my ad in Craigslist just incase something else is out there...

When I mentioned the issue to the gentleman I am trading with he questioned if it was the actuator possibly not engaging fully - something about it having a plunger that may not be going all the way in? I just started the trouble shooting of the 4X4 not working when I decided to try the trade for a PU so I did not look into it too far. Someone suggested with the truck not running to turn the ignition key on and engage the 4X4 then get under the truck and try to turn the fron drive shaft - if it does not turn then it is a problem between the hub and the transfer case - or so they said. When I tried that test the front drive shaft can not be turned by hand as you can when the 4X4 is not engaged. So??? I do not know enough to say. The front hubs are not leaking grease or vibrating under braking etc... When you hit 4X4 high you hear a thunk under the floor plan and when you go to 4X4 low you hear a louder second thunk. If you drive forward the front wheels do not engage and the dash light stays blinking in both modes. I did check all the wiring and it all looks good from wheel to the actuators...

6.5 possible trade!

Just got an email on a trade for a 96 crew cab dually 5 speed 4X4 with the 6.5. Left a message. May be able to stay in the diesel afterall... Also saw a really nice 97 GMC sierra with 454 yesterday - pray that one comes through. Interesting to see what the options are after the first offer.

Will keep everyone posted.
