Thinking about buying a 1995 6.5l 5speed turbo diesel

Hey guys hope you can help me. This is the first time I have looked at 6.5l 2500 and know nothing about them and any major problems one can have. Point being I went and looked at a 1995 6.5l turbo with the 5speed ext cab long bed with topper. No fifth wheel just 2". Manual windows no power. Green in color with no rust on body. Has newer 18" eagle alloy wheels since the old ones got rusty. Its clean interior has no saggy headliner. 90,000 original miles and believe me it looks to be true. The underneath has some rust but I have seen newer fords alot worse plus truck is from ohio. 1st gear is slow! but it shifts fine through all gears and is very torquey with lots of low end power. No dents on outside I couldn't find anything major at all. It is not caked with oil and is clean underneath mabe a little oil on that pan but I expected alot worse. PRICE IS 6700 FIRM. Is it worth that? I kbb it but I know every diesel is well over kbb. If just a few guys want to say yay or nay that's fine I just need a second opinion. This is not knowing if any parts are in need of replacing I figure I will find that all out while I drive it more.

:humm:

Price seems steep to me, for a 95 with no power options, basic receiver hitch.

Just did the kbb and without knowing the options on it, just guessing its retail is around 6k is all. In the economy now even diesels sell for at or below kbb. Private party value even with almost every option available barely makes his asking price.
I say try to talk him down.

Ok. I was thinking it was steep also but with 90,000 its hard to pass up. I cant find a newer diesel with less than 200k miles for 8 grand plus. This on is also cleaner than the high mileage one. So I'm still on the fence though I do agree with you turbostang but it seems everybody is asking well over kbb.

If its what you want go for it, the vehicle is only worth what someone will pay for it. Lol

That seems a little a little high one thing you should find out on the truck is if the PMD is relocated allready if it is still anywhere under the hood its in a bad place and IMO you will be replacing it soon :yeah:I love my K2500 especialythe fuel milage I am rocking at 23MPG around town and that trans is a NV4500 it really is a 4 speed with a Granny low gear if and when you have to do the clutch you will want to consider doing a single mass flywheel lots less trouble in the long run:rocking:

Too high for a 95, strategy here is since the 6.5s have such a bad reputation make an offer that more or less you are doing them a favor 5K tops and it would have to be in excellent and I mean excellent condition. Call your insurance co and see what they would give you if you had full coverage and it got totaled, work between that & the retail price you see in the guides, because at end of day all it is worth is what your ins or "the other guys" insurance will pay.

6.5 auto trans if drive train is healthy 16-20 mpg tops also depends what final drive ratio is check RPO codes in glove box for that information provided gears were not changed out at some point.

This 4x4 or 4x2 that also has impact. 6.5s IMO one of the best kept secrets in Diesel game with right knowhow they can be made to really perform far beyond what many folks realize, won't match maximum potential of the "modern Diesels" but easliy able to pull more than what one would generally want to pull. Me with my mods 18K loads done skeer me :) with some sensible driving.

you stated "bad reputation"

okay I was scrolling through past postings to find out info about my "new" purchase.
Last week I bought 1995 Chevrolet 3500 Diesel 6.2 turbo crew cab with 76k miles.
You mentioned the bad reputation it has...in what way? no pulling power, lots of maintiance problems? Can you elaborate? Anything will help me understand this "horse".
Never owned a truck much less this size. It looks like it was loved, looks like it is out of the showroom. I had to guess the owner took care of its engine since the outside looks so good. I bought it to pull by first 5th wheel 27' max wt. 12K. The truck even has a huge extra fuel tank in the bed right under the window. It also had the hitch for the fifth wheel. I have to buy new tires because the ones are 11 yrs old.

My gut said it was a good deal, but one mechanic said it should be used as a boat anchor. It is mine, but ANTHING you can give me as far as facts about this truck would be appreciated.

I was told the same thing. And 8 years later and some mods later. Pulling a 9000 lb. toy hauler I either get, "that's a 6.5?", or, "I can't believe that a 6.5 pulls like that. I always thought they were gutless".

I feel that way about 6.0L Fords.

My Wife's Uncle bought a new 2012 Ford. He has had 5 trips with a couple days spent at the dealer fixing power problems on that truck. $60,000 to not even get 1 year of trouble free driving. No thanks.
