83 Burb. Problem
 

ok . this has happened twice.

drive to place. temp above 78* turn vehicle off.

go do whatever, come back. vehicle wont start. glow plug heating light does it usual thing. on first attempt. but next time it does random things. ( on off on off) still wont start. somt times it really wants to. but cant get itself lit.

so we have to wait like 2 hours, then it starts normally.

any ideas on whats going on. its not my truck so everything is getting relayed. but it happened while i was being shuttled around in it. so i know a little about what happened!

How many miles are on it. With it doing it while its hot it sounds like a problem in the IP pump. If it is still warm when you try to start it again it dont need the glow plugs to fire.

the body has 120k miles. but the engine only has 20k. the lady we got it after she did somthing to it and had a crate motor put in 5 years ago. its been well taken care of... all paperwork from the begining.

Lift pump?

Usually hard starts when they are hot is a IP problem on every diesel I've ever messed with.

Couple thoughts, Sometimes it can be contributed to the injecton pump. But in the same respect , this is a manual pump. It can still be the cause, but i would do some more checking first. I know more about the 6.5's but I would call up to Heath! They know these 6.2's and 6.5's like no other! Lift pumps can also be affected from heat soak.
Does the vehicle eventually start?

Electronic pumps are much more effected by heat soak!

I dealt with this problem on Hummvees when I was in the corps. Usually ended up being a wiring problem going to the injection pump. Be happy it runs when it reaches normal operating temp.

Another vote for a bad Ip.

after taking a look at it this weekend this sounds about right. ill do some more playing tomarrow. and thanks for the code reading tip. ill have my buddy do it today!

BTW >> A paper clip works really good. straighten it out and insert into the slots...so your codes read a 12 first then the next two are the next code,, 33 ect..
