94' Chevy 6.5 turbo diesel increasing idle and smoke

Hello, I'm new to this site and could use some serious help to find out what is ailing my 6.5 turbo with 182000 miles. Problem began with a wondering throttle and now has turned sour as with a cold start the engine increases rpm's to 2000's by itself when idle. Engine starts quickly everytime and has never stalled. The pedal does not move just the rpm's increase. Returns back to 600 rpm's if I put it is gear (I know this is not recommended). When it finally settles down the idle is rough and wonders 100 to 200 rpms and sometimes increases to 1100 rpm's. On acceleration or when going up hills black smoke pours out the exhaust and continues to surge.

Vacuum pump is strong but I have no way of checking the waste gate solenoid.

Would appreciate any suggestions on where to begin looking for this problem.

The PMD is bad it is not the waste gate or waste gate solenoid

Many thanks for the suggestion of replacing the PMD, it was the first item to consider on on my list. Would appreciate yr suggestion on which PMD you would recommend and should it be black or the new grey one? I'm planning on getting the largest heat sink and bumper mounting the unit.

I just put one of these in my 94 a couple months ago frome these guys so far no problems with it make sure you get the resistor out of the old one in your truck make sure you get the extension harness from them too as they have free shipping, here is a picture of how I mounted mine I used a piece of angle iron with a notch cut out of the middle for the bend of the bumper make sure you put a ground wire from the heat sink to the body or frame to keep it from burning up before it's time

surging idle and hunting rpm

i am an auto mechanic and i have one in the shop thats kicking my butt , this turd had a locked up turbo ,but the reason it came in was over 1200 rpm it would go crazy and overrev, then almost shut off then take back off again. no check light, all three app sensors are smooth

Over reving and erratic RPM's is a classic symptom of PMD failure

6.5overreving past 1200 rpm

here is a hair puller;2001 6.5 past 1200 rpm the engine goes ape shit, surges to 4000rpm then idle.i have a snap on modis and everything is sweet. no check engine light.the turbo was locked up tighter than my gun vault.:s:

Is the PMD still locayed on the IP??this is the worst location possible for a PMD as a matter of fact anywhere under the hood is a bad location for it:ouch:

Can't tell you how thankful I am for what I'm learning on this site. Obviously new to it. I had a PMD that was changed and relocated to the bumper due to truck not starting one day. Good to go for several months. Other fix intermitting lack of power when passing on trip which require new LP. These obviously fixed problem for some time. Then the other day attempted to start veh. Surging idle, black smoke billowing and no accelator pedal. Alot of shops go right for the IP. Not prepared for this. In comes diesel bombers and options and information became available. IP was the opinions from mechanics. Wasn't satisfied with that answer till I could rule out less costly stuff. Being that I had the PMD already relocated and replaced I thought this would be the last place to look. Not. So glad I did some research. Tonight I just put it in and runs like a top. STOKED. Money in the bank before christmas. Did I say stoked.

Flight Sytems had a bad run of PMD's that caused runaway engines and strange smoke problems about 18 months ago or so.

They are aware of the problem and know the serial #'s affected and will warranty them if they fall within that batch.

Contact Dipaco to see if yours is one of them, they will not release the serial #'s affected to the public and barley admitted the problem.

Any PMD not marked stanadyne is a flight systems PMD no matter how it is badged-Dipaco dtech, dorman ect.

Many years ago there was another brand of PMD produced called Sol-D but are no longer on the market.

Thanks. I did send a email to Flight Systems today with all info regarding my old PMD. Darn thing still looks brand new. I hope they can provide a response and answer as to the problems with their product during that time. These things are too expensive just to keep replacing them.

I was on the phone with customer service at Dipaco today about other things and thought to ask them about the pmd failure-runaway. They definitely know about it and know the serial numbers of the ones that could fail. They told me that if you had one that failed to call them and if it is in their determined bad lot they will warranty it. The phone number for customer service at dipaco is:775-329-7511 The guy I talked to is Kieth . his extension is 116
The problem is supposed to be fixed in any new pmd/fsd from them.

Racer55. Thank you for thefollow up info. Called Flight systems who other than stanadyne are the only true manufactures of the pmd's. Well here is there e-mail. We are sorry to hear about your troubles with our PMD. We do understand your frustration. We warranty our PMD’s for 1 year unlimited miles. As we are the manufacturer of this product, all warranties are handled through our distribution network. We do not recommend the use of an extension kit, nor do we sell one. We designed the PMD to be mounted to the pump for optimum performance. Therefore, we do not warranty our PMD’s unless it is mounted on the pump. If you have any future problems with any of our products, please work through your point of sales or distributor to file a warranty claim. FUNNY AIN'T IT. I mean there only 250 bucks.

racer55 11-17-2012 09:14 PM

Sounds like SS Diesel who won't warranty a PMD unless it is mounted on their intake mounted heatsink-the intake is the worst possible location.

I tell people to temp mount on the intake long enough to take a picture and then relocate outside the engine bay.
