6.2 barely pulls 6200 lbs?

1991 gmc 6.2 4x4 4:10 rear.

I just returned from a 1700 mile trip to TX and back and on the way home I pulled a 6200 lb toy hauler. Im half deaf now.. 14 mpg average 10-18 mpg

All I can say is it got me home without a hickup. But the power just wasn't enough.. Sucks when your slowing down each hill sometimes as low as 50 mph on the interstate. Flat lands are OK, but Im a bit concerned about taking it to Colorado.

Update: I just returned from Colorado and the 6.2 just didn't cut it. I had to shift into second going up Monarch Pass. Lost the clutch and stopped with a semi right on my tail. Not cool but clutch worked a few minutes later and I made it over the top going 17 mph. Then on the way home had a head wind and averaged maybe 55 mph. Took three days back instead of two out.

Do I need a different truck? Or would a turbo off a 6.5 be enough so I could actually run the A/C while pulling my toyhauler?

Thanks

I say you would definetly have more power with the turbo and get a tick better economy with a turbo as well 6200lbs is a lot for a 6.2 especialy after you factor in the weight of the truck

Thanks. Trailer is tall and wide forgot to add. Not sure how much hp & torque I actually need to maintain 40 mph over those Colorado passes.

6.2
143 hp @ 3,600 rpm / 257 lb·ft @ 2,000 rpm

6.5L turbo
215 hp @ 3,200 rpm / 440 lb·ft @ 1,800 rpm

Leaning towards a different truck because I dont trust my 6.2 after what I put it through a week ago. Has slow vibration at idle now which moves the entire truck.

7.3 or 4/6bt?

4x4 diesel van anyone?

If you go the 7.3 route you may want one with a turbo my buddy has a 1991 7.3NA and my 6.5 will pull circles around it with the A/C running

i had a 83 6.2 with ats set up when i got it had 5 psi n i turned the fuel up and hit 10psi you dont want to go over that with the 6.2 there made to get good mpg and be reiable but no power house and my 84 is a 1/2 i pulled 9000lbs and on flat it was ok hills well thats a different story haha. i loved my 99 f-350 reg cab 6 speed it would pull anything i put on it and my 99 cummins good truck cheap front ends, if your gunna be pullin bigger loads your gunna need a different truck id say.
