New Here New Truck

Hello,

I have recently just purchased my first diesel truck, and I am in need of some advice!!! I live in the Midwest to give you some climate conditions. Last week I bought a 1989 Chevy 6.2l C 2500. It has 151,000 miles on and about the only thing I can tell is that it looks like there has been some splicing, crimping, and re wiring of some of the electrical, and the glow plug controller looks new. The truck ran strong and shifted well on my test drive before purchase, and the guy only wanted $800 for it, so I took a shot. Now that I have it home and am ready to put a few bucks into it I am wondering if there is anything specific I should be looking at or checking into while I am in getting this thing ready for hopefully a couple hundred thousand more miles. So far I need to, or feel I need to replace the batteries, serpentine belt, two tires, air filter, oil change, and glow plugs. I have discovered the head lights, dash light, and brake lights don't work, and the connector to the alternator has two of the three wires cut off( like it was essentially done to bypass something). I notice the service fuel filter light stays on when running. The guy I bought it from said he replaced the fuel filter but couldn't get the light off. I have read some stories about this problem any insight would be appreciated. I also have read about some glow plug bypass problem that people have had to do. I am wondering if this has something to do with all of spliced together wires under the hood???? Any help on this would be appreciated as I am new to the diesel game.

I look forward to keeping everyone posted on the project.

Welcome Foster once you get the bugs straitend out I have a feeling that you will love that truck especialy the fuel milage that it will be getting my 1994 gets right at 23mpg and my CUCV gets 30mpg easy understand these are no powerstokes or cummings or the mighty DIRTYMAX but they have respectable power compared to any old gas burners so all the best and good luck with your truck. P.S. try and get some pictures of said truck

Today I had some free time so I replaced air filter ( which had a rodent nest in it), Oil change, Serpentine Belt, glow plugs, and changed the batteries.

What is the cable that runs along side the accelerator cable??? Mine is disconnected. It has a a connector with a hole on the end, the other runs into a box mounted on the firewall has a wiring harness plugged into the box?????

After running the truck today discovered two new problems. First I went out to start it and the wait light didn't come on for the glow plugs. I tried to start the truck and nothing after checking the wires and multiple failed attempts it finally came on. I waited and the truck started. Is this the glow plug controller??? The second problem I noticed is blow by coming from the dipstick tub. I just changed the oil yesterday and did not notice it before, even after letting the engine idle for a long time. The truck is running rough when I let it idle like it is going to die. There is no oil coming out from the dipstick and the smoke or gas isn't allot. Could this be cracked piston or the CRD Or etc????? Is the CRD the canister on top of the valve cover passenger side that says this side up???

Thanks

A little smoke out the dipstick hole is normal and yes that is the CRD you can clean them out with a little diesel and the blow it out with compressed air and it wont hurt a thing
