Transgo Jr Install Step By Step... Pics Included, Best I Could Do...

First off, I did the best I could with pictures since my hands were dirty. If there is not a picture it is because it is explained in the instructions pretty good. If you use a lift and work under your truck make sure your truck is steady and secure. If you work on the ground I suggest those drive up ramps to raise the front of the truck and then block the back wheels.

1. You will need at least a 15 qt drain pain. Place under the truck and remove the drain plug in the allison pan. Let drain until dripping. This will ensure that most of the fluid is out. Once that is done replace plug in pan.

2. Remove the bolts from the pans outer edge and slowly drop the pan down and remove the internal filter. Careful as more fluid will come out once filter is removed.

3. Begin the process of removing the plugs from the solenoids and the pressure switch and get them out of the way.

4. Begin to remove the outer bolts from the VB. See pictures below for more in depth look.

5. Once the VB is loose then turn it towards the passenger side and slowly tilt it down to remove it, this will clear the pin from the shifter. Watch out as more fluid will come out.

6. Place VB on bench, I covered mine with a trash bag, worked great.

7. Remove all bolts from VB (see pics below) and take the VB apart and remove the sparator plate.

8. Drill in the proper location, following instructions. Remove any snares from the VB on the under side from drilling. See pic below.

9. Follow the instructions to remove the plate and solenoids, and tube to get to the trims valves. Remove the old trim valves and follow instruction in kit to install new ones.

10. See pictures below. Once trim valves are in and solenoids are back together then install the plate to hold them in, make sure the accumulator springs are back in as well before plate is installed.

11. Place separator plate back on VB and make sure that everything lines up and is clean of debris or metal shavings.

12. Place top of VB back on the lower half and begin to install the bolts. See picture for locations.

13. Once VB is all back together and pressure switch and tube are back in then you can tigheten things up and get ready for install.

14. Replace the VB back in trans the same way you took it out making sure that the pin front side goes back into the shifter.

15. Make sure you plug everything back in and then install all remaning bolts. Tighten and re-check everything, twice...

16. Re-install the internal filter and then the pan, tighten everything up, re-check bolts, not sure on trq spec. Just make sure they are tight.

17. Pour in 12-14 qts and check with truck running in park. You can re-use the transmission fluid that you catch if you want or you can do what I did. I called Mike L. and he told me that Mobil 1 Synthetic was the way to go so I bought 16 quarts of it and put that in. I am going to wait a little while put some miles on it and then drain more out and put more synthetic in, should all mix well and will be 95-98% all synthetic at that time. Will not hurt to mix them if you want to use new stuff with what is still in the trans and converter.

18. Drive till warm, park and check again, add if needed.

I know that pics are not in order but you can get the idea and as you tear it apart you will see by each picture what I am talking about.

It was interesting to tear into but for the most part it was not bad at all. Once I got in there and got my hands dirty it seemed to go pretty well.

Did you notice any difference in how the truck drove? My understanding was that it should feel stock, but be able to handle more power.

Nice write-up. I have been thinking of doing this to mine. This will be a big help.

We put one in Gmclbz's truck a couple of weeks ago and it was a piece of cake just gotta take your time and be clean follow the instructions and tq specs and it will be an easy job, i haven't drove it yet but being a passenger and from what he tells me the shifts are much firmer than stock. DD

It shifted better and handled the power I dumped on it really well. My truck was heavily modded and there was no issues at all. If you need help with the install let me know, I would be more than happy to help you when you get ready. I have a garage and plenty of tools and I am right outside Houston...:U:

It will drive nice, that install is simple and it will hold pretty much what you can throw at it..

Your garage still allows GMC's???

I might take you up on that once I get it back from the bodyshop :madd:

I think I can make room to get it in there... :humm:

I don't mind helping out man.. Just let me know...:tttt:

Big_Johnson 11-20-2008 04:17 AM

this is an old thread but decided to post on it anyways. so i'm about to buy a programmer should i get one of these even if i'm plannin on getting a suncoast kit?(which will be a good ways down the road...) and will it handle a +220hp tune?

stkdram55 11-20-2008 07:13 AM

I dont know if it will handle the 220 tune, but it would be a good idea to get it, because if ya want to run it on a higher tune and get on it a little bit then you dont have to worry as much.:pca1:

The transgo Jr. is only for the six speeds, they are stronger stock. The transgo is what we need in our 5 speeds and will come with that suncoast stage IV kit. The transgo shift kit is not as easy of an install the trans has to be removed so you might as well wait and build the whole thing while your at it. Just the shift kit will only help so much the converter is still weak and wouldn't hold up to that kind of power very long.

Big_Johnson 11-20-2008 01:57 PM

oh ok. so is there anything else i can do to help out my transmission?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

and how did you change the info deal under your odometer?

He Changed his DIC (Driver information Center) with EFI Live. As for the transgo shift kit for your 5 spd.. I would NOT flog on it with any tune over about 70hp, even with the Transgo.

The 5 spd trans is not quite as tough as the spd IMO..

Drive easy, and save up some $$ for the whole trans and EFI live.. then you can flog all you want.

Big_Johnson 11-20-2008 02:35 PM

alright sounds good. i'm not gonna run all that power in it all the time. just a couple runs out at the track.

Be Gentle on the 4-5 Shift..:w2:

Big_Johnson 11-20-2008 03:15 PM

now how exactly am i supposed to do that?

Oilfield_Mafia 11-20-2008 05:31 PM

just back off for that shift.. you can count the gears as the trans is shifting up thru them. so when it gets ready to shift to 5th, just let off the pedal and let it shift, then roll back into it to keep it from downshifting.

uwyo_dmax 11-20-2008 06:19 PM

I would even still be a little careful rolling into it in 5th, thats when i limped mine. Of course my tune was considerably larger than 70 horse :w2:

Big_Johnson 11-20-2008 06:48 PM

lol well i'm playing on doin this with a 200hp tune. just for a couple runs. so yeah i guess i'll just let it shift and hopefully the guy i'm racing wont be close enough for slight time i'm off the pedal to matter.

uwyo_dmax 11-20-2008 07:29 PM

I ran mine on a tune that was around 150 horse all the time since early this summer and didnt have a problem until i turned my pulse width way up to do some experimenting, thats when i finally limped it :ouch: So as long as your nice to it on the shift you'll probably be fine :U:

Big_Johnson 11-20-2008 08:47 PM

alright. i reckon it's just gonna be one of those wait and see kinda things. :pca1:

nbomar 02-14-2009 11:51 AM

So on an 08 with the Transgo Jr. and the Quadzilla 135 tune will it be ok or do i need to back out of it for the higher shifts also?

Crankrod 06-29-2009 01:50 PM

I just put mine in.........My first time inside a transmission.
I had the pan off/on 5 times trying to figure out what I did wrong...
My first mistake was NOT looking at your pictures first! The instructions with the transgo JR are pretty crappy.

My first mistake was I missed putting the little black pin in the slot when i put the valve body back in the trans. It wasnt hard to figure out that SOMETHING was wrong, cause it would NOT come out of park!

So the pan comes off again, off comes the valve body again.. after I saw your pics, I immediately knew what I did wrong. It didnt hurt anything, the shifter was just stuck in park.

So we get it back together, it helped to take the shifter "just" out of park when putting the valve body back in, gave me a bit more wiggle room.

Got that squared away, put everything back together, filled it fill of fluid and I got a DTC code, PO877. The trans is in limp mode, all I got is 3rd and reverse.

Now I am starting to panic, there wasnt anything wrong with this trans, the truck just has a bit over 10K on it and its an 08 GMC. I'm think I screwed this up and now I got to come out of pocket 7,500.00 for a trans...

I take everything back apart, including yanking the valve body back out. I see no issues. I re do the trim valves and its all looking good. I put it back together again and I got the code back immediately after clearing with a code scanner.

I cant call Ron @ Suncoast cause its Sunday, I cant call Transgo tech for the same reason. So, I take it apart again, checking all the connections, and looking for anything that might give me a clue. I didnt see squat.. Seriously frustrated by this time and thinking I got to spend big bucks to fix my trans that wasn't broken........Wondering why I always modify my stuff till its broken.

Tired of assembly and reassembly, I wait till Ron gets in on monday morning. I give him a call and he laughs... 877 huh? He said you got an O ring thats out of place on the blue plastic thing. He'd done that before himself. I take this apart again, and just like he said, an o ring at the very back (towards the rear tires) was out of place. I put it back together, praying that was all that was wrong and wha la, after I reset the trans with the quad stealth 2, I got no code and no engine light.

After all this, I COULD PUT ONE OF THESE IN DRUNK & BLINDFOLDED. I guess I got what NOT to do covered.

Hope this helps someone else.

:argh:
