How many miles are too many for an ATV??

Well guys, i think I'm going to talk the wife into us getting an ATV for snow removal, I had a Polaris Sportsman 500 HO about 8 years ago and really liked it. I have found a few 700 sportsmans with 3500 miles on them.. does that seem like a lot? i am sure that ball joints and tie rods are going to wear but what do ya think? itd be mainly for plowing snow and putzing to and from our local lake, about 1 mile away. :humm::humm:

what year is it?

Red_Rattler 11-20-2011 01:27 PM

Hope you have a good two stage or single for the wet heavy stuff... And IMO 3500 is alot, I bought mine with 68 lol the guy never used it except to hunt. I love mine for plowing but like I said the wet stuff proves to be an issue.

There is a lot of them out there that has 3000 and going strong and some with a lot less that are JUNK check it out good look at the oil and air cleaner this will tell you how it was taken care of. GOOD LUCK

not 100% what year or what engine size, gonna buy it in a few weeks. im wondering if a 500 is going to be enough snort for plowing? should i look for a 600,700, or 800? im guessing that you plow in 4 low...

Red_Rattler 11-20-2011 07:22 PM

a 500 is plenty, but a big bore quad makes it alil more fun and easier :D def utilize 4 low while pushing or working the quad alot easier on the ctv

Just plow it in stages, 4to6 inches at a time makes it alot easier plus means more play time:w2: don't tell her that though:rocking:

Ya 3,500 isn't bad at all for milage, was just curious how many years it took to get that. I would think a 500 should do fine..maybe just a bit slower :tu:

We plow with our 350 rancher 4x4 with a 50" county blade... just be smart and don't let it pile way up and you'll be fine. If you know you're getting non stop snow for 24 hours, do it a few times during the storm, it will be much easier on you and your equipment.

3500 really isn't much on these newer machines.

More important than miles is the condition it's in and how it was kept. If it's been maintained you shouldn't have to worry about anything.

In my opinion, 3500 miles on a 4 wheeler is a lot but I have a cousin with 8500 on his 07 sportsman 800 :ouch:

I wouldn't spend money on a used one with that many miles. I just sold my 05 Sportsman 500 with 2500 miles on it, and I always took care of it but in the last months things were just starting to wear out

Well would you rather buy a new 4 wheeler with new parts, or buy a used one and start replacing parts?

Mdub707 11-24-2011 06:55 PM

It's just like trucks, some trucks are still in great shape with high miles, it really boils down to how it was used and how it was taken care of. I've seen trucks with 150k miles that I'd buy over some trucks with less than 50k miles!!!
