The Official Hurricane Irene Thread

To be updated by everyone thats getting ready to catch an ass whooping from Irene. What you doing to prepare and update during and after to let us know how you made out.

Went out and bought food, batteries, beer and lots of gas for the generator today. Getting ready to go pull some boats out the water and set them high and dry. Then its off to Maryland first thing to snag the camper from the campground.

Should be interesting

bobfbigman 08-25-2011 07:40 PM

I got 65 gal of gas for the generator, looking at being out of power for at least a week maybe 2, 10 gallons of mixed for the chainsaws/ we are the only one in the neighborhood that actually know how to use them, bunch of yuppies around here, I took down a decent size maple in my front yard because it was in bad shape, didn't want to take a hit to the roof. I have my small backhoe ready to go if the creek/ Rock Creek/ starts to rise and I need to build a wall around the house or to just fill in my window wells to keep the water out of the basement, my first floor is only 3 steps high so any higher than that I'm screwed. flood plane cuts right across my front yard, I've never seen it but my wife said that during Agness in 72 the creek was in the middle of the road in front of the house, and my first step is only 1 foot above the road:scare2:. The most important thing is that the truck is full of fuel so if power is out I should be able to get somewhere that has power if we need more fuel:jump:. enough for now, STAY SAFE FOLKS. Bob

Its started here. Just rain now. Waiting on the wind. I'm figuring on a week w/o power if it come like they say it will.

Were you at Bob?

Going on two days without power.... Thank god for generators!

1AMatt 08-29-2011 03:24 PM

I lost power for about 3 hours yesterday, other than that nothing major happened here in central MA :yeah:

turbo20psi 08-29-2011 08:11 PM

Didn't lose power throught the whole thing..:humm: that is a first for me. Amazing what trimming around the 13,000+ volt lines will do for the commuity.

I hear ya, allthough around here they are 4160v lines in the neighborhoods, with all that wind I could see and here the lines getting hit but I think pepco turned up the trip settings on there main breakers so it would just burn the limbs off:tu: Its amazing what a couple miles makes with a storm like that

Make sure you stock up on fuel for the next one, katia, the name that replaced Katrina, is heading this way, it is way off now but preliminary tracking is bringing it to the east coast..

You didnt have to be anywhere near the coast to get K.Oed by Irene,Vermont has the worse flooding ever. But the coast was no bargain either lost 4 trees in my back yard alone and still no power for many.

yakdaddy42 09-05-2011 02:44 PM

so who has to worry about Lee

mysterync 09-07-2011 11:20 PM

We missed the the first one but Lee soaked us!

bobfbigman 09-08-2011 01:25 AM

Roads all over the place are closed, I'm talkin major highways with 4 foot of water on them, never seen that before. Ellicott city better be prepared, they say this is the worst sinse hurricane Agnes in 1972, the rivers in PA. are going to top out above the Agnes levels, might be trouble for Coniwingo dam on the susquhana river, during agnes the corp of engineers had the dam rigged to blow so they could save the hydro electric plant but they lucked out by 2 feet of water, with all the gates open they just managed to save it, not good for everyone down stream, they were wiped out. Susquhana is supposed to crest at 38' that is 6' more than when Agness hit:scare2:
