Tell me about Texas

My family and I are moving to Texas. We are planning on leaving here on Wednesday. Crazy part is, is that we have no idea where we're going in Texas yet. :argh: Originally we were looking at the smaller towns near Houston, anywhere north to west of it because we read that south and east isn't all that great of an area. Now we're looking around Austin.

The reason for moving is medical reasons. One of my sisters kids has brain cancer(DIPG) and I guess there's a hospital or two there that might be able to help her, plus my mother needs a lower altitude for her health. I'm going along because of 1. its to tight financially for me to stay here myself, and 2. because of hopefully finding better opportunities whether its jobs or going to school.

So if anyone knows of any areas near Houston or Austin with decent jobs, cheap housing, and welding schools, please tell me so that we can check them out. I refuse to go to a big city and if that's my only option I'll live out of my truck to stay here.

Also, I give anyone and everyone my permission to come and try to smack some sense into my sister. She is planning this entire move and she's trying to make it happen before we're even ready. Hence why we have no idea where we're going.

Thanks but I think she already has the hospitals she wants to try in mind. Nonetheless, I'll pass it on to her.

there are many good places around Houston outside of the city, Katy, cypress, pearland, spring, woodlands, sugar land to name a few

Austin is the best place in Texas!!!!! Well, the Hill Country in general is great. :tu: You might also find help at Lance Armstrong's livestrong.org. It's a foundation he created after he survived cancer. It's more a resource type of place to help you figure out what/who/where etc etc. I don't know if it's based in Austin, but I know Lance lives there.
Also, Austin Community College, (if it's still called that) is a quality institution. My wife went there 15-odd years ago, and has nothing but good things to say about it. Apparently not much has changed as she knows some folks who've been there recently.
Hope this helps, and good luck! :c:

I would say the houston area would have to be my vote. There are lots of little towns outside of houston that are not that bad of a drive in plus there are several good hospitals there.

Also there are several UTI or similar schools there that teach welding. Also the job market is pretty good around there.

If you want to look at something besides welding schools, check out School of Automotive Machinists.

houston area has one of the best cancer centers in the world so good decision on the move. sorry to hear that she has cancer thats gotta be hard.

south houston isnt the best place to live but its not the worst in the city. if you go farther south (pearland friendswood and alvin on the west side of I45 and league city seabrook and clear lake on the east side of 45)

as for welding schools i know the junior college san jac offers some classes on it (san jac has 3 campuses around the southern part of the city 1 right next to pearland/friendswood [south campus] one in pasadena [central campus] and 1 in north shore [north campus]) u may wanna check out their website and see what it tells ya (sjcd.edu)

and ill do some more HW into where there are welding classes in houston cause i know their have got to be more than just san jac

as for the north side of houston idk how far out u wanna be but there is the woodlands (30 min northo of downtown and expensive as hell) conroe (45min north of down town) willis (50 min north of downtown) new waverly (55min north of downtown) and huntsville (u dont wanna move here i live here and their is nothing to do plus is probly an hr and 20 from downtown)

if you want anymore info on this stuff send me a pm and ill give u my number and we can talk. ive lived in this area of tx my entire life
