dc to ac converters
 

Anyone know anything about 12 VDC to 110 VAC converters? I have a 10 cu.ft. house fridge in my camper and usually we only go within an hour and a half from home, so we don't worry about stuff getting warm. In a month, we are going 3 hours and 15 minutes and I think that is too far. The camper already has 12 volt behind the fridge so all I would have to do is hard wire it and boom I would have 110 while driving.
Are there different types? How many watts would I need? I will check the amp draw of the fridge in a bit. Just thought I'd start the thread while I was thinking about it.

the current draw is for running..

start-up current is a whole other story, it will draw about 10x running current to start the motor and that's what you need to get an inverter to handle. most likely need a 1500W or larger inverter to run it.. and that will pull some current when that compressor for the fridge kicks in. hope you have an extra battery in the camper and some big wire :)

on another note they generally all come as a modified sine wave which should be fine for most applications, motors included, the pricier the better the cheaper the worse it will run it, so look for better brands. if u were just running lights and heaters and stuff the cheaper ones are the way to go, if you are running it in your house, the really expensive pure sine wave inverters are best!

$1400 is a lot for a fridge when I would only use the 12v and propane once a year.

You'd probably be $ ahead finding a used generator, setting it up in the bed of your truck and running your AC stuff off of that. Then you'd have a generator for other power outages, etc.

yes a generator would be your best bet... and they are like $200-400 at pawn shops here in utah... where as a good inverter that will run that fridge is going to run at least $300-500 most fridges run about pretty high in the amp draw while they start up so the 1500 watt inverter mentioned earlier isnot going to be big enough...

If you post up the amp draw I can tell you what size inverter your going to need...

I have a full size fridge in mine too and love it. I also would say go with a generator. For the power you are going to need now will cost you probably as much if not more than a generator. And with a generator you can park that camper where ever you want and have power. Generators are nice to have :tu: I don't think I would take a chance on any appliance from a junked rv
