The Jack Russell is a working terrier. Terrier work requires a dog that will bark at prey so that the dog can be located underground and be dug out if necessary. As a result, Jack Russell Terriers are most definitely vocal dogs.
Jack Russell Terriers are also very intelligent, high-energy dogs – requirements of a working dog which must problem-solve in the field and work tirelessly against often formidable quarry. Due to their compact size, friendly and inquisitive nature, and intelligence, Jack Russells are popular as pets. Prospective buyers should be aware, however, that while these dogs may enjoy sitting in a lap, they are not “lap dogs” – they are dogs that require training and regular and consistent exercise to maintain their temperament and to occupy their minds.
Jack Russell Terriers are very playful.

Jack Russells that are not trained on a consistent basis, or are not exercised regularly, may exhibit unmanageable behaviour, including excessive barking, escaping from the yard, or digging in unwanted places inside and outside the house. In America, several Jack Russell rescue networks have to work constantly to find temporary and permanent homes for Jack Russell Terriers whose owners could not meet these requirements for keeping these dogs as house pets. Prospective Jack Russell Terrier owners are advised to do their homework.
Most Jack Russell Terriers easily mingle with children, though they do not tolerate even unintentional abuse. Most are outgoing, and very friendly towards other dogs, but a good number show same-sex aggression issues. Some JRT's exhibit a Napoleon complex regarding larger canines that can get them into dangerous situations. Their fearlessness can scare off a larger animal, but their apparent unawareness of their small size can lead to a lopsided fight with larger dogs if not kept in check.
It is not uncommon for a Jack Russell terrier to be cat-aggressive, and homes with other small fur-bearing animals in them (pet hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets etc.) would do well to think through the ramifications of bringing a working terrier into the house.



WOW I dont know any other American Looking little Dogs (NO MINATURES OF LARGER BREEDS) That would make a Single Child age 4 Happy :)

bout to say...if you could deal with a big dog I would get a rotty...let him raise the rotty it will be his. But do the same with the jack russell, let him raise the dog. Make sure he WORKS that dog. They are very energetic if you hadn't gathered already. I'd say get a female as well. The mothering instincts will kick in and be protective of him...then again what is your Shepard...male or female.

my friend had one. decent dog once he got it trained but it took ALOT of training to calm it down and get it to stop barking ALL the time.

I don't like little dogs at all. I knew some people who had some Jack Russels and were hyper as hell. Go get you a good lab DM. They are by far the best and only dogs on the planet worth owning. Thats just my opinion

I had a Jack Russell mix when I was in college. My dog's dad was a full Jack Russell. They are great dogs. VERY smart and VERY full of energy. Mine weighed in at around 30 lbs. and could clear a 4 foot fence without a running start. The father (who was named Diesel, by the way) was only 18 lbs. and could climb a pine tree 20 feet straight up.
These dogs are very smart, but very stubborn. I have heard the best way to train them is with a training collar that beeps and/or shocks.
If your other dog is a male, I would DEFINATELY suggest getting a female. We used to joke that Diesel was a Rott trapped inside a Jack Russell's body... The males are VERY territorial and typically do not like other males at all. If you're getting a puppy, it may be different since the older dog can establish dominance, but I wouldn't take the chance...

get a rat terrier. They arent as loud as the jack russel and arent as energetic.
Also It was Teddy Roosevelt's favorite breed. they are swimmers as well.

I didnt think I wanted a little dog either but he is the coolest bugger. he likes to be everywhere you are but not annoyingly. being in the same room with you is fine with him.

he is awesome with the kids (they are 2,4 and 5) and he gets tortured and is still nice to them.

I havent gotten him in the water yet but next summer I will get him in our pond.
I left him in the garage for a day when I went to work and he killed the chipmunk that has been planting seeds in just about everything I own.

Hes happy - thats what its all about...

Yes Chase is very happy:hd: and he's doin a pretty good job taking care of her.
He named her Sassafras but we call her Sassy for short.
