Telecom workers?

no, not IT

i'm talkin towers, site maintainers and installers, technicians, stuff like that.

what's the job market look like now a days? I know at&t has been doing a lot of build-outs as have others. and I would like to get in on it. I've always been a radio guy but keep drifting away from that. I would rather find something I enjoy doing rather than what I have ended up doing.

suggestions? companies to look at? questions?

I'm thinking Verizon would be a great one.:tu:

Verizon recently laid off a bunch of people:ouch:, and looking to get rid of more.:scare2:
Unless if the wireless side is doing something. We're one big happy co.; however the right hand rarely knows what the left is doing.:s:

I meant the wireless, att is always having huge swings. It all depends on the condition of there infrastructures. Most will be hard to get on with right now with the economy.

radio systems, I love it.

but it's been hard for me to get a foot in the door. it's very rare to see them hiring for non management things anymore. I always wanted to be a broadcast engineer but with PC's doing everything and the level of automation the market is miniscule and virtually impossible to get into.

I know there's a LOT of tower companies, but even the bigger ones run pretty lean, most are looking for networking people.. IT and networking never seemed a challenge so aside from knowing it It's not a thing I could handle day to day.

I can tell you right now that there's a whole 5 people that handle all the paging systems for northern ohio (yes pagers are still used quite a bit) plus handle a few emergency systems on top of that.

I guess i'm just frustrated in not finding the right contacts in the industry I would like to be in haha.

The telecom industry sucks big time right now unless you are in wireless. I am ceritified in Nortel PBX and Key Systems and have been layed off 4 times in the last 3 years. :argh: Everybody is going to contractors which I'm doing now, but they don't want to pay anything.
In VT Verizon sold out to Fair Point, and down south towards the Carolinas and TN, they sold out to Embarq. We still have them here in Northern NY, but there has been rumors of them selling out here too.

I have plenty of contacts and such, but nobody is doing anything right now. :s:

wireless :tu:

and yeah, I hear ya on the contractors.
