I hate being bored

We went from full blast can't get stuff done fast enough to nothing to do. I have to force myself not to do things so my guys will have something to do, I am bored. I might have to get back on the Fodge next week if something doesn't pick up:pca1:

K50 11-12-2009 04:32 PM

Man I hear ya. I've been slow as hell here for a month. My boss is a useless tit which also doesn't help. I'm supposed to be working OT to save hours for christmas!!! Not going to happen though if he can't get his act together.

I was pondering starting a thread just like this weeks ago :w2:

Cheers to the rant! It sucks but at least I'm not the only one...
Yes, I'm still employed...but internet surfing for half the day hardly counts towards my repertoire of professional qualifications...

If anyone has any advice I'm open...I'm going NUTS!!

Matt...........ya need to find customers that have big projects but arent in a hurry.............give em a better rate if they can do it during slow times................when I was in biz I always had a few tucked away for slow times like this

jessy 11-12-2009 05:22 PM

Last week and the weekend we were hauling corn out of a field to a batch dryer. I had 7 trucks on the job for 76 hours straight. We have been hauling fill for the last 2 weeks from 3 different sites. For the last month we have had a higher number of crush and run calls for driveways then normal.

Monday it started raining, well it’s Thursday and it’s still raining. I have 8 trucks running sand to a sand bag filling machine and 5 small trucks with trailers running pallets of sand bags around the city. We have more orders for rock then we can deliver. The 2 local rock quarries will not go to extended hours.

The rain should end sometime tomorrow. Both quarries are shutting down Sunday because of the weather. Monday looks to be hauling rock for driveways mostly. Wednesday we will have slowed down and my part timers will be calling me wanting some hours not me calling them.

Right now I’m down to 5,500 gallons of fuel in my tanks. The local tank farm lost power on Monday and is still working one shift. Late Monday I ordered fuel from 3 different delivery companies and they all have me on the list for some time tonight so I’m sleeping in my office. Most of the local gas stations only have regular gas and diesel but there prices are sky high.

Yea im with you guys its nice to go from balls to the wall to kicked back for a little R&R. But that dont pay tha bills.im in a family business with food distribution to resturants schools ect. there is still stuff going on every day trucks to load, trucksto unloadjust not as much so have alot of down time on the puter surfin, readin threads in DB, and lookin up info. Not many people eatin out in resturants theese days:booo: And the gov.:moon: says we are out of the recession now out of it and into a depression idk :humm::w2:

I have been lucky this year. We did not have to lay off any full time employees. I’ve been able to give my part time employees a few days a week if they wanted it and part of the time if they didn’t want it.

We just got another emergency alert. More heavy rain for a few hours and flooding thought the night.

Our main phone lines will not stop ringing. People don’t understand that we don’t have gravel. You are ordering it from the quarry and we deliver it to you, or as 99% of the people do you call us and we order it on your behalf from the quarry and deliver it with a combined bill. I swear some people think we have a huge pile of crush and run sitting out back ready to go.

I’ll take a few slow days please.

diesel pap 11-12-2009 06:44 PM

matt pick up the phone and call me for more goodies for your truck.:U:

jessy 11-12-2009 07:18 PM

I scored. I just got a call asking if I wanted to do a bulk buy on 3 loads of fuel (33,500 gallons) at $2.279 a gallon (33,500. The first one is on the rail now and they will send them about 10 min apart. The bad part it’s a 45 to 60 minute drive for them.

I’ll make it home to sleep in my own bed tonight.

diesel pap 11-12-2009 07:19 PM

We have some good jobs to do, just no equipment here yet. I also have a list of projects for February for when we really get slow I just don't want to get into those right now and be tied up with low margin jobs when the good jobs start to roll in again.

I'm just more or less complaining because it's no fun sitting in my office all day while my guys are out working. You can only surf the forums for so long you know?

Patience Tony, I keep dreaming up ideas on new truck projects but right now I need to move some furnaces first. Our business is so dependent on the weather it's not funny, luckily it's cooling off right now so we should have plenty of service calls tomorrow. I really want to get going on the Fodge again, but I know as soon as I bring it back to the shop I'll get slammed with installs and it will just sit in the way. February it's coming in so I can finish it up while the guys are doing all these odd jobs I have lined up:U:

Um, are you sure that was from lack of work to do, and not lack of work from you? That's a big cut!

Captain Call 11-12-2009 10:21 PM

Hell I've only been laid off for a week and everything is fixed and cleaned up. I'm bored out of my mind! I bought some leather and am making some chinks and spur straps just to keep busy. Hell I'm gonna go nuts when that's done.

jarrett 11-13-2009 02:01 AM

Well I guess you guy's are doing better than me. Were at sea right now, I work a 12+ hour shift with only 2 hours of work to do a night. Can't really surf the net all night because we lose connection all the time. But hey I can't complain it's a job and I still enjoy what I do for Uncle Sam.
