New Computer?
 

I'm got my self a New Computer and I'm wanting to transfer everything from my old one to the new one. What is the easiest and best way to do this. I've had several new computers but usually just start over and I really don't want to do that this time. Can it be done through a USB Cable? And will I be able to find everything once the transfer is done?

You'll know when I do this. Won't see me until I can get the computer tech here to fix it after I try to do it myself. Could be weeks:w2: Maybe I should save myself all the headaches and just hire someone to do it.:humm: Nah that would be the smart thing to do:w2:

Easierst way, get an external harddrive transfer everything onto it, then just transfer it on to the new one, or you can run your old files off the harddrive and keep your new computer "unloaded" which keeps up the speed

I agree with rkadcock. Easiest way to do it is either buy a new external harddrive and transfer to it or use your old harddrive as an external drive, or you could use it as an internal secondary drive also if your case has room.
There are several ways to transfer the data to the new harddrive if you really want to. USB Data transfer cables are but one way.

With the right cable why can't you just hook the two puters together and treat the old one as your external hard dive. All an external hard drive is, is a the same drive you have in your puter with a separate case around it. In the old days they called this laplinking the puters.

I have a cable form iogear that allows me to hook up to another computer and transfer files and mess with the other computer

An external hard drive is very handy and they are pretty cheap nowadays. They used to be $300 but can be found for around $100.


Jazz, how old is your computer? Its already been mentioned, but you could rip your hard drive out of your old computer and install it innthe new one. Be aware that it could concievably slow down the new machine some.

Theres lots of options here - another one is to buy a hard drive enclosure (~$50.00) and install your old drive into it - making it an external drive.

take the old one put it on a table then throw the new one as hard as you can on top of it and it should transfer all your data...:w2:

I'm thinking my old computer is about 4 years old. Would the hard drives be compatible. Didn't hard drives change from IDE to SATA.
Sounds like the best way to do this is a external hard drive. If that doesn't work I will definitely give stkdram55's idea a try:U: Probably even throw in a couple stomps and kicks.

New computer has 8mb ram and 1000 gb hard drive. Old one has 1mb ram 160 gb hard drive. Might use the old one as a family computer and switch that one out. I have my own my wife has her own and we have a family one which I might as well get rid of now because my kids all have laptops and don't really use the family one any more What do you guy's do with old computers. I think I have 3 right now that aren't in use.

Combine em together and make a superputer.
