Looking For An Affordable Laptop

All I really do is surf the net, use autocad, and watch movies on it. I want a good size screen for Cad and everyso often I decide I want to play a game (mostly flight simulator) looking to spend a grand or less. Been looking at the Dell outlet online and see a couple I like but they all have Vista... Help me out guys!

FastCR 10-12-2009 06:19 PM

dell is def the way to go. If you call them they can load it with XP but they charge you extra because you still have to buy the vista license. I haven't ran autocad in awhile so I don't know what the sys requirements are to get it to run decent.

I can also mail you a disk if you get vista. :w2:

reiser 10-12-2009 06:52 PM

I'm a mac man myself but if i were to buy another PC laptop it would be a Toshiba with 17''screen..oh and as far as vista just wait and windows 7 is out next Thursday..oh and on a PC go AMD on the processor not intel...

once you go mac you never go back!!!!:rocking:

FastCR 10-12-2009 06:54 PM

i can send a disk for that too lol

busta 10-12-2009 07:15 PM

hp has a few sales on right now :w2:
I don`t like amd and the wifes last 2 laptops which have died have been amd
I`ll stick with reliable intel

If your configuring one on dell , try to use a cooperate discount

my wifes mac is aswome but smarty isnt compatable but i really like my dell it has vista but the windows7 upgrade and for a reasonable price. mac looking at 1700 for a nice set up

greasemonkey 10-13-2009 12:34 AM

Check out Bens Bargains, they find good deals on all kinds of good stuff, like the 17" HP 320GB drive, 3GB memory for $519 at Staples.

HP, Dell and Toshiba laptops have worked well for me. Another good thing is you can get a laptop setup to run Vista, buy a $99 copy of XP and install that since XP takes a lot less memory to run, you'll have a supercomputer. Or you can upgrade to windows7, which I know nothing about, I don't know if it works well or not.

Diesel Dawgs Performance 10-13-2009 12:40 PM

I got my Dell from Best Buy for $599 last yr. Intel Core 2 Duo, 3 gigs ram, Vista, I believe its a 200gig HD. Been working good for me with no issues.

I always had good luck with HP . Ordered my last one off of e-bay .:U::pca1:

Marine 10-13-2009 06:03 PM

If you buy a DELL, really haggle on the price. 30% markup compared to HP or Toshiba. I feel that DELL is not that well made. Personally, I would not get a DELL. Look at the HP 8730 or the Toshiba. Also look at the Lenovo W500 series, as that is designed for CAD/CAM users.
Most business or enterprise level laptops can be bought with XP; you just have to ask for it.

RSWORDS 10-14-2009 06:46 PM

Got this last night at Best Buy. I like it so far

Toshiba - Satellite Laptop with Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology - Graphite Gray - L505-S6946

Marine 10-14-2009 06:48 PM

Pretty good deal!

12vcummins96 10-14-2009 06:54 PM

i have the toshiba satallite with the duo core processor 4 gigs of ram 360gig hd high def i love it

RSWORDS 10-15-2009 11:37 AM

Loving this laptop so far. Vista seems pretty nice but Windows 7 will be out soon

millco 10-15-2009 04:56 PM

You did good!

If anyone else is looking, a few good sites to keep in mind are

newegg.com
ecost.com

Ecost usually has the best deals if you know what to look for. They do have a lot of refurbs; but, you can get an extra warranty. Plus we have never had any trouble with any of their stuff.

I would agree with the above comments about which ones to get. If any of you have any questions, please ask. I hate it when a person spends too much or doesn't get the best available (RSWORDS, you did good!).

busta 10-15-2009 07:39 PM

vista ain`t too bad but not sure about 7 yet too new gonna have alot of bugs probably

RSWORDS 10-15-2009 08:59 PM

hey kevin! Been a while buddy!

How you doing?

Begle1 10-15-2009 09:48 PM

The only laptops I ever see myself buying again are ruggedized notebooks.

They all got small screens, though...

busta 10-15-2009 10:22 PM

doing okay had dent removal done yesterday :tttt:

we use those on all the medic units... they blow goat balls... ackward to use and like you said small screens

millco 10-16-2009 11:44 AM

LOL! I Love the description! (Got to keep that one and plagiarize it!! Lots!!)

Busta, glad to see you out and about bud!! (Dent removal?) (Sounds a little.... 'Ouch' to me.....) (We've all been praying for you!! Hope all is going well with all of that..... We just got word from the ins. co. that is responsible for who hit my wife and girls in Dec that they are finally ready to settle. Hopefully you will get some good words like that too!)

I think you guys are going to like Win 7! From what I could see of it; it is a lot 'lighter' on the computer and does a lot better job of setting up new hardware and networking! It was going along just great for me until I 'nuked' it! Remember when XP would say that a program had not been 'certified' as 'compatible' with XP? Well, 7 has about the same type of statement and it turns out you should maybe listen to it....... Oooppss!! I figured my sound card driver would work anyway so I told it to shut up and install it anyway.... Long and short of it is just don't! Unless you like having a 'blue screen of death' for no reason... Sometimes it will do that and a physical memory dump just by logging in....
But the program itself, I think you all will like! It isn't even that hard to find where they moved things..... (I hate that: It isn't 'new' if it is just moved / re-located!!:ouch:)

Bob Wagner 10-16-2009 11:59 AM

This one used to be 499.00 but now its a free upgrade to win 7. costco also has a bulletproof return policy.

This works great on the rioad

Costco - HP Refurbished 17.0" T6500 2.1GHz 4GB RAM

millco 10-17-2009 05:18 AM

Looks like a good machine!

Those turkeys have not only increased the price to $550, but now it says it's not eligible for the free upgrade to Win 7 . . . . That isn't very nice of them! I don't like Vista enough that would be a deal breaker for me! (Course I have a 'disc' that will erase any errant O.S. . . . . :w2: So it's not all bad!)

Pyro690 10-17-2009 11:47 PM

My ol lady has pret-near the same laptop since March 09 and it has been good to her.:c: Vista is not that bad, only some of the older lame software that few people want doesn't work but most stuff now does.

mikmaze 10-18-2009 08:32 AM

that does look like a good unit Bob, with 64 bit it would be a blast to up the ram to 8 gigs and let er rip.

DB Admin 10-18-2009 08:48 AM

dont 64 bit systems have troubles with software designed for 32 bit systems which is like 99% of software ?

Marine 10-18-2009 02:46 PM

I don't think so. The issue is the 32bit software can't utilize all the power of the 64bit architecture.
