Let's Talk Cell Phones

Our contract with Cingular has been upfor a few months now and we need to do somethig with it. The wife wants a phone that does everything but fix dinner. A phone, internet, GPS, camera and text message. Don't care anything about music on it. So I'm lookin for recomendations, not even particular about which company to use yet for service. Probably go with who ever has the right phone available.

CHenry 06-21-2007 02:48 PM

I don't know about GPS on any phones but i have had internet on my phone before and it was WAY to much of a PITA with the small screen. I mean full HTML. If you just want to connect and read the news or look at weather, any of the new phones will do that i think. I have a motorola KRAZR and it plays MP3s, takes pics/vids, bluetooth capable, is internet capable and if you have a laptop, you can get cingulars 20 dollar internet package and connect your cell phone to a laptop and have wireless internet anywhere you can get a phone cignal. Granted the internet isn't really fast...slower than dial up i think but its internet.

Uncle Bubba 06-21-2007 02:54 PM

We got the Razor V3i's now that are still more advanced then you can get at the cingular stores. But ya the screens suck for internet and she wants an actual key pad for texting. She's looking for something like the Blackberry. A small computer type thing. I just don't anything about em to know if there is anything better out there now then the the Blackberry's. Or if they are even worth it.

CHenry 06-21-2007 02:58 PM

Blackberry will cost you an arm and leg for there service through cingular.

Johnny Cetane 06-21-2007 03:09 PM

take a look at these guys. i've been looking at them for a bit. had some good reviews on the web about them. they offer gps service and their phones aren't priced too bad.

I've heard the Blackberry Pearl's are good through cingular and I have seen a few people who have these phones that slide apart and they look like they are perfect for text messaging, little computer like keyboard and all just not sure who carries them

The prices and phones seem to be right on these plans, but have never heard anything good or bad about quality of service. They are somthing to check out though. If they turn out to be a good service they look like the company of the future.

Johnny Cetane 06-21-2007 03:58 PM

yah they're new. think only a year or two old. atleast that's when i remember seeing commercials and hearing about them. i'm locked in with t-mobile right now, and am really happy with them, but i might switch to helio next year.

dozerboy 06-21-2007 04:33 PM

Have you been happy with Cingular?

They played some contract games with me. I told them a one year contract and paid the extra money for, but come to find out they changed a meaningless document to one year and left the primary contract at 2. A little game of shuffle the papers. But that's nothing that would stop me from signing with them again if they had the right equipment. Just be a lot more carefull about what I'm signing.

Uncle Bubba 06-26-2007 08:54 PM

Still lookin for ideas, if there are anymore comments out there.

CHenry 06-26-2007 10:59 PM

If you sign with a new company, you can probably get them to pay your contract penalty fee if you agree to switch. I have heard of it but never done it...might be worth a try.
I am actually thinking of trying this myself cause i have a 2 year contract agreement with cingular and have thought of changing before 2 years is up.

I have done that before switching from alltel to cingular and they paid my fees to cancel my contract early.

nextel has GPS capabilitys on all of there phones, just something to think about

Logan 06-27-2007 07:26 PM

Pretty much all Verizon phones are GPS capable. They have the new blackberry's too. Very nice, can be used anywhere in the US or Europe, maybe South America too. I have been with verizon for many years and they are great. If you want a plan for the blackberry though, it will cost ya a little more for the data capabilities. One phone that I have heard a lot of really good things about is the LG Envy, but it is spelled a little different. Check those out. It is a Bar phone that opens with a real nice sized keyboard on the inside. Pic, vid, bluetooth, expandable memory slot for mini SD cards. Very nice unit even if you have big hands for the keyboard. Check it out.

The Moto Q is pretty nice too from Verizon. I would not get one because I have big hands, but it might be really nice for a female.

Verizon

I have been pretty happy with Verizon. Dont forget the new Ipod phone is coming out.

2001shrtbedcummins 06-27-2007 07:39 PM

I don't know about other parts of the country but here in florida nextel is known as maybe nextime you'll get service. I can get service with verizon a lot further out in the boonies than the nextel people...but the merge with sprint has done loads for their service...basically go to the mall, let the little lady go around to the different kiosks, find the phone she likes and get service with those that have that phone.

TCU Fan 06-27-2007 08:37 PM

Nextel SUCKS, I am currently trying to get out of my contract with them. I have 11 phones that I am still trying to switch back to Cingular. I had my personal phone switched from Nextel to Sprint as a courtesy of Nextel and it sucks also.

The only good thing about Nextel is that I get the unlimited everything for 99.00 plus a 30% corporate account discount so I cannot complain about the rates. Coverage though it is TERRIBLE.

I'll be playing this game shortly also and Verizon is the only company I'd deal with besides Nextel. (depends on your area)

I'll have to check the pricing of both plans as I don't text, internet, or take piactures with my phone.

I just want it to be a reliable, indestructable phone with bluetooth for the upcoming hands free laws.

Rick

Uncle Bubba 06-28-2007 01:37 PM

We have had great luck with reception on Cingular so far, but who knows how that will be affected by the new merger. That's the big problem right now, is all these mergers. When this happens they re-structure the tower contracts so who knows what the next best service will be.

That's the same as I am. I don't care about any of the gadgets as long as It has a phone book and makes calls I'm good. I use the cheap phones when I can cause my phines usually don't last very long and the cheaper ones have always been sturdier in the past. If I use an hours worth of minutes a month there's been a crisis someplace.

If I use less than 3,000 per month than I must have ignored a ton of calls. I would rather have it your way for sure.

I luv retirement. My phone rang 24 hours a day when I was workin. Some Jackass in some part of the world always thought their lack of planning and crisis was my emergency.

Uncle Bubba 07-03-2007 08:18 PM

I know some of you all out there have the Blackberries, are they worth darn or are they outdated junk. The same question for the other compies version of them also, whatever they call em.

It really depends on how soon you need to reply to emails, I use mine all the time because I subscribe to multiple sites that consumers email different vendors request for bids. I always want to be the first to reply to their request. If you don't need to reply immediately than it may not be worth the extra 50.00 per month.

Uncle Bubba 07-03-2007 09:58 PM

Me, I just want a phone but the wife likes all this high speed low drag stuff that she will never use. Is the $50 just for internet or is that somethin special.

It is for the unlimited data transfer internet and email.

Uncle Bubba 07-17-2007 11:47 PM

Well I think we have it narrowed down to two different phones now, but keeping in mind that I don't know Wi-Fi from Sci-Fi I'm lookin for any advice I can get on the difference between them. Or any other phones you think are better for that matter.
