Hit and run

Man, I'm po'd right now. I was changing my fuel filter yesterday, just about to screw the new one on, and some idiot drove past and smashed my mirror clean off on the driver's side as he drove past. Didn't even stop. That :edit:.

I got his license plate number and reported it to the cops, and my neighbor was driving the other way and saw the driver. My brother was in the house and said he heard a smashing noise, so obviously if he could hear it in the house, there was no excuse for the asshole who smashed it and kept driving. I sure hope the police will help me out and nail the guy. GM charges $300/mirror, and my insurance deductible is probably higher than that. I'm having enough problems with fuel, I really don't want to spend $300 on a new mirror. The cops classified it as a hit and run, so hopefully it won't be too hard to get resolved.

Throw me some words of encouragement. If it were up to me I would have just done something stupid and forced the money out of him, but I'm hoping the diplomatic way of doing things will turn out much better for me. :argh::ph::madd:

Ahh man, that sucks!! Sorry to hear that.
Guess it's time to get a ranch hand front and rear bumper set, and lift it so high that no one will be able to touch the mirrors.

busta 03-02-2009 03:04 PM

sorry to hear of your luck bud had it happen to me too on my gasser only difference was they took out the whole side of the truck and bumper $5000 worth of damage but didn`t know who did it so payed my $500 deductable and got it fixed up

K50 03-02-2009 03:34 PM

Yeah, I was pretty mad when it happened, but I guess it could be a lot worse. Maybe I'm lucky all it was was just a mirror and not me, or the whole truck.

wildbill 03-02-2009 08:23 PM

Be lucky you didn't have the door open and getting ready to jump out. :humm: :ouch:

K50 03-02-2009 10:14 PM

Well, I really was lucky!

The police showed up today only 15 minutes after I called them in again, and they came by to talk to me and said that they had talked to the guy who hit my truck, and that he was willing to pay for the damage. I phoned him, and he was pretty remorseful, and overall seemed like a decent guy. For some reason I'm really not angry at anyone now, I actually feel good about the whole thing. It's nice to have closure, and although he ran, he took ownership and is willing to pay for the damages. Unlike some people, I'm not going to be an asshole and make him pay more than he should. I'm going to go through GM Parts Direct and try to get the mirror for much less than the dealer would charge. I'm lucky that the guy is even paying for it, in too many instances, people are left angry and frustrated having to foot bills for themselves from anonymous vandals or suspects. It's odd, but I actually feel good about it. How ironic. :c:

busta 03-03-2009 12:03 AM

Glad to hear he is owning up to it and paying for it:U:

Well, he doesnt have a choice does he? Wonder what would have happened if you hadnt been outside and got his license plate number?

Wonder what would of happened if you were standing in front of the truck changing your fuel filter and he ran into the back of the truck? You were pretty lucky - glad to hear it.

Begle1 03-03-2009 12:11 AM

Sounds like he's a smooth talker that got you wrapped around his finger. :tttt:

F250Hoss 03-03-2009 09:04 AM

Yeah like everyone has said you are lucky that he only hit your mirror..and he better be more than willing to pay for the damages or else that=fines and possible jail..I had some high school kids run into the back of my dads truck:ouch: one morning and you better believe that i called his parents and dragged his ass back to his dads house.

hahaha. I guess eh, some people are good liars.

Yeah Dr.Evil's right, he still has to pay the price.

I managed to rig the mirror up and tape the housing with duct tape, it actually holds pretty well, and I was able to adjust it so that I can still see properly. When I'm driving I can't tell from inside that it's broken, so at least I can drive around without having to shoulder check like a monster.

K50 04-03-2009 01:50 PM

Well holy :edit:....I just got a quote from the GM dealer...That mirror costs.....ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS!!! that's right, ONE power mirror assembly, costs $1000 CDN...what the hell?! I'm pretty sure I've seen them on ebay for $365.. This guy isn't going to be too happy, and because the damage is over $1000, that means that I now have to get insurance involved...what fun this will be. :ouch::booo::pca1::humm:

OneBadBia 04-03-2009 10:51 PM

who cares if hes happy or not? I have only been in two accidents and both of them were hit and run. He pays it or you take him to court its that simple. Why do you have to get insurance involved because its over 1,000?

stkdram55 04-03-2009 10:54 PM

$1000 Canadian what is that USD like 27 cents :D :tttt::moon:

IC Smoke 04-03-2009 11:23 PM

If he is cool about it now, why didnt he stop in the first place to leave a note or talk to you? seems like he is smooth talking you to keep the consequences down for himself on his azz hat action.... :humm:.

Haven't talked to the guy yet, but I'm assuming he won't want to pay $1100, and rather go through his insurance..but in that case, would he get charged with hit and run? I have no idea how this works, I've never been in an accident before...

What I'm thinking is,
I'm going to show him the quote, then make him an offer- give me a cheque for ~$900, call it even, instead of going through the dealer. That way, I fix it myself, and pocket the rest. I'll come out ahead that way. Sound good?

Yeah, I'm thinking of asking for a certified cheque, or else doing a contract stating that if the cheque fails to clear then I will prosecute him to the full extent of the law. :c:

True.
But as long as I get a cheque for $900 out of this, I'll be happy.

cumminsdad08 04-06-2009 02:53 PM

hey i have been on the other side of this, i was pullin a trailer with one of our cube trucks and it was a tight street. well needless to say i "aperantly" caught someones mirror with the truck or the trailer and never new it. couple hours later the boss called me and asked what happend, i said i didn't hear or see anything, i don't know who told who what, but the company ended up paying for it. i have been yankin things around for years and it only "happend" once to me, and i don't really think i caught it, but i would never know anyhow, so maybe this guy might not have realized it untill later. still sucks for him and you, but if he is going to pay, and fess up to it, can't be that bad. BUT i could be wrong, he might have known and just tried to get away with it. and i would make him pay for the whole deal, direct factory replacement, no one should get off easy at anyones expense, good luck!!!

K50 04-07-2009 11:50 PM

Alright, so I'm a day away from getting paid out for the broken mirror, and some dumb took it upon themselves to key the entire right side of my truck. I'm pretty pissed off right now. It happened while I was at work, there's a ton of kids that walk to school past my house, and I swear if I find the guy who did it I'll break his face. The mirror was bad enough, but now this? This was cowardly. The mirror was an accident. But some moron thought it would be funny to gouge the paint from front to back on the side of my truck, without even having the balls to show me who they are. And unlike the mirror, I can't just waltz in and get money for the repair... I'll have to pay the deductible...So all the money I get from the mirror will go straight to the body shop for this. I hate this city more and more every day. That old belief about Canadians being nicer and more friendly than the Americans is a load of crap.

CumminsCrazed 04-14-2009 02:10 PM

sounds to me like your on a good run of bad luck :(

Sorry to hear of this now as well

K50 04-14-2009 04:19 PM

Yeah, it took me a solid day to calm down. I'm still pretty choked about it, my truck has pretty flawless paint on it. I just want it to look like new again. I was considering one of those fancy Viper alarm systems when I first got my truck, but I figured I was just being paranoid....now I'm not so sure.

Meralain 04-17-2009 12:31 PM

I know how you feel! Got whacked in a parking lot a few years ago, guy gave me all his insurance info et cetera, but like an idiot I didn't call the cops and get a report. Went and got an estimate--about $1200 to get a new bumper and paint the scratches on the body. Turned it into his insurance, they didn't pay. No report, and he wouldn't authorize the claim. Never got a dime out of the guy.:argh:

haha, unless I stand next to my truck with a loaded colt, I don't know that it will prevent random vandalism.

At first I didn't know what you were talking about....Check?? oh...you mean Cheque! (In Canada we use the British spelling for most words) :tttt:
