Arctic Sea Ice Underestimated for Weeks Due to Faulty Sensor
Email | Print | A A A

By Alex Morales

Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- A glitch in satellite sensors caused scientists to underestimate the extent of Arctic sea ice by 500,000 square kilometers (193,000 square miles), a California- size area, the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center said.

The error, due to a problem called “sensor drift,” began in early January and caused a slowly growing underestimation of sea ice extent until mid-February. That’s when “puzzled readers” alerted the NSIDC about data showing ice-covered areas as stretches of open ocean, the Boulder, Colorado-based group said on its Web site.

“Sensor drift, although infrequent, does occasionally occur and it is one of the things that we account for during quality- control measures prior to archiving the data,” the center said. “Although we believe that data prior to early January are reliable, we will conduct a full quality check.’’

The extent of Arctic sea ice is seen as a key measure of how rising temperatures are affecting the Earth. The cap retreated in 2007 to its lowest extent ever and last year posted its second- lowest annual minimum at the end of the yearly melt season. The recent error doesn’t change findings that Arctic ice is retreating, the NSIDC said.

The center said real-time data on sea ice is always less reliable than archived numbers because full checks haven’t yet been carried out. Historical data is checked across other sources, it said.

The NSIDC uses Department of Defense satellites to obtain its Arctic sea ice data rather than more accurate National Aeronautics and Space Administration equipment. That’s because the defense satellites have a longer period of historical data, enabling scientists to draw conclusions about long-term ice melt, the center said.

“There is a balance between being as accurate as possible at any given moment and being as consistent as possible through long time-periods,” NSIDC said. “Our main scientific focus is on the long-term changes in Arctic sea ice.”

Al Gore is AN indiot...

Believe what you want, the guy knew what he was doing... Flying from city to city in his private Jet, driving his big SUV, telling people the world was ending, and making millions of dollars doing it. He invested millions in "Green" technology companies, and after he went around saying the sky was falling, people bought into it and went green. Now all that money he invested is worth millions more, because these green companies have skyrocketed in sales, and profits.

He's not an idiot, he's just a sleazy SOB who used his political power (he did still have power, after all, he did win the popular vote) to make money with spreading a few words where the truth was stretched... Or broken, depends on how you look at it.

Whit 02-21-2009 09:41 PM

so he is a crook then eh.....................he would make a good politician :humm:

he is full of him self. if it were global warming then why did we break 2 dozzen snow fall records in the last 16 months?:argh:

7.3 Cowboy 02-21-2009 10:16 PM

Its all the Mcall.

Yeah that does make him a crook Whitmore

akguppy 02-22-2009 07:41 PM

It's all about MONEY! And Al wants it all! The more people "buy" into his BS, the more money he has coming in to pay for his $30,000/yr utility bill. :pca1:

akguppy 03-01-2009 02:47 AM

Also, there was some satellite that was supposed to put into orbit that would measure green house gasses or CO2. Anyway, it "malfunctioned" and is a total loss.

More global warming;

A rare March snow blanketed much of Alabama and winter storm warnings are in effect along the East Coast.

Scott Unger of the National Weather Service office in Birmingham says a winter storm warning for Alabama is in effect until 3 p.m. Sunday mostly for several northern and eastern counties _ with much of the rest of the state under a winter storm advisory.

Unger says snow accumulations could reach up to five inches in some areas of Alabama.

The weather service says winter storm warnings are in effect from northern Georgia and the Carolinas through the Mid-Atlantic states into New England. Forecasters warn that eight to 14 inches of snow is possible in the Philadelphia area.

This is where I get bashed.
Al Gore is not an idiot. This from the OP "The recent error doesn’t change findings that Arctic ice is retreating"
Like it or not that's whats going on.

Gore is a politician but no idiot.

Racer9 03-01-2009 06:28 PM

OK, AlGore is an idiotic politician, but then aren't they all?
You're on old news, heres the latest;

As Anthony Watts blogged last week, the arctic ice is increasing at a very rapid rate. You can see how we fell short of last year’s record extent and have recently been rebounding at the fastest rate of the years shown. October 18 UPDATE: Now we are running 31.3% ahead of last year.
From here; ICECAP

Old Al made the perfect politicians didn't he? It's amazing all the people making a living off of this hype crap. Kinda like the satellite that was mentioned. How much green house gas was put making and launching this satellite that didn't make it into space?
What this world needs are more experts to run around and spew there crap at us. I really think mercy killing aught to be legal!
Please don't mention Dan Q., he might see this and think some one cares about him! I don't think we want him on here do we?
