to all you smoke happy drivers

I saw something today that kind of made me think a lil truck passed me with a mobile diesel smoke test sticker in the back window so because of this I decided that I should say some stuff. I know some of these links are older I figured at the rate that diesel popularity is growing as well as this site I figured informing some people newer to diesels some of the issues we are fighting.

Rolling Smokestacks - Strong regulations are needed to clean up diesel tracks and buses

A Smoking Gun - Environmental Defense Fund

I know I may be smashing on the fun of rolling some coal throughout the neighborhood but just remember be careful of who you let have it because you never know who they are thank you for listening and looking at the links hope this helps some people understand what we have to put up with to enjoy what we have.

P.S. I am not an anti-smoke guy it has its time and place just don't think excessive amounts is needed on the road if you wanna smoke like a train do it on the track and not into the windows of fellow drivers vehicles

/Rant off/

Interesting mile for mile, trucks do a lot more harm to public health then do cars.:bat: That article above sure makes diesel trucks out to be evil.
I guess the guy in the Hummer is green after all :argh:

yep, I love to roll coal now and then too; but in the interest of preserving our hobby we REALLY need to watch it. I know of quite a few county employees (pretty high up) and officers that are really offended when they see even a tiny puff of soot...not that I think it's right but we need to be a lot more careful than most of us have been; especially now when the regulations seem to be aimed at who can afford to pay fines and are crafted to appease the loudest public outcry.:madd:

Its not where it actually ends up. Its the perception of what its doing. The fact that our smoke looks bad is enough. so your attitude and future clamed actions are the cause of our sport being watched. To the greenies those fart pipe hondas are gold compared to our trucks.

cummins freak- this is true, just tryin to say my opnion

This is honestly the attitude that is getting DPFs put on diesels. We as motorsport fans and enthusiasts need to look at the perception that normal people that dont drive diesels or love them as much as us have. They see the smoke bellowing from our trucks(which i wont lie i love) and its gross, smells gross, and inpairs their vision. It doesn't matter what we know about our emmisions, its the uneducated drivers and vehicle owners that have their voice heard whern it comes to diesels. The honest thing is, smoke needs to get handled better and needs to be managed better by the diesel enthusiast behind the wheel of his or her vehicle. This is for the on the road diesel vehicle, im not talking about the seld trucks or drag vehicles out there. One day the smoke on the tracks will need to be managed for safety reasons(drag racing.) I know alot of people dont want to be forced into this, so we need to as a whole diesel world start monitoring ourselves instead of letting the EPA and as some call them, tree huggers, say what we can do with our sport. We are under the microscope of more than just the EPA. We have an opportunity rto do something before we are forced to do something. My opinion is we need to monitor ourselves and look outside of the box, smoke can be fun but it can also be the death of the sport i love, lets not shoot ourselves in the foot.

1slowCTD very well put i am new to the hole diesel sence but i still understand when we need to watch areselfs because we dont need big brother telling what to do anymore then he already is.

Don't worry, your opinion came across loud and clear; this thread is pretty much intended to speak out against STUPID actions such as your stated intentions. Read the thread again, no one's saying we can't puff out a tiny whisp of smoke ever again and that none of us should consider it fun. I'd compare your actions impacting diesel regulations to a gang banger's effect on gun control. Is it the right way to solve either? No. But like it or not, public perception affecting legislation is what we have to deal with.

Don't get me wrong, I hate fart cans but smoking out every rice rocket you see is like sport bikes and suburbans revving on each other, it's just dumb. If they wanna go fast'n'furious on yer truck, by all means, drive circles around 'em and leave them in a cloud.

Your post was literally a breath of fresh air. It's nice to see people promoting responsible actions like this. You shouldn't be afraid to say that.

Eventually, we all know it will become a track-only thing, and possibly that will be phased out as well, just as leaded gasoline was recently phased out from Nascar.

spoolinaround 02-24-2009 01:44 PM

but blowing smoke is so much fun :w2:

Uncle Bubba 02-24-2009 02:28 PM

Just to be real honest here about the perceptions of the gasser drivers around us. When we blow smoke, we think it looks cool. When we blow smoke they are thinkin what a junk ass truck. To them smokin means it's junk not HP or cool.

Personally when I see a truck blowin smoke all over the roadway I just think about what a piece a junk air intake they must be runnin to be wastin all that fuel and horsepower they could be makin.

There was a time when I felt the same way you do. I have realized over the past few years going from a healthy smoking 12v ctd to my 08 psd which has all the emissions stuff and knowing that the reason it is that way might have been partially my poor choices with my old truck. I am not saying that its not fun because trust me my next project will smoke like train but when on the road it will turned down.

Thank you all that understand where we are at with our sport and what it will take to keep it growing in the right direction :U: :c:

i agree with the fact that i love blowing black smoke even though i probably own the 2 least smoking diesels you can have besides the DPF'd motors that dont smoke at all. i also think that 80 to 85 percent on the people on this site agree with me too.

but the only way more people are going to start buying diesel powered vehicles and more people get into diesel motorsports (ex. Sled pulling, Drag racing, Dyno runs, Pulloffs) is if we clean up our trucks and make them clean without them belching black smoke and making black clouds of soot across highways and roads.

i think of the diesel industry as it is today like drag racing and salt flat racing in bonneville in the the 1940's and 1950's. it is very popular in a small group of people but in the mainstream it is frowned upon and not very popular. the only way diesel is going to become popular is if we become somewhat clean.

In 1972 when the EPA started really cracking down on emmisions big block V-8s were making 180 horespower and getting horrible fuel mileage. people were ripping off their cats off and replacing the restrictive intake manifolds and getting bigger cams to replace all the emmission equipment that the manufacter put on their to pass emmision and make the enviroment cleaner. sound familar?

its excalty what most peope do to there 6.4L powerstrokes, LMM duramaxes, and 6.7 cummins to get more power and increase fuel mileage. theres nothing wrong with that but once you put a programmer on these trucks they start to really smoke. well now a corvette can make 650 horespower get 20 MPG and has 4 catalyic converters and is a whole lot cleaner than the 1972 emmision V-8 cars.

what im basically saying is as technolgy increases so will the abiltily to make more power. ATS for an example is making a high flow DPF exhuast. i dont agree with what they found on ATS computers with ratting on other diesel performance companys but that is a whole other story. basically if companys try to put more money and interst in this more products will come out to allow us to get performance and fuel mileage out of these trucks without ripping out all the emmision equipment on them
