CHICAGO (NBC) - He had a police uniform, a radio, and a ticket book, the only problem was, the so-called Chicago police officer was actually a 14-year-old boy.

Now, the department is investigating how the boy was able to impersonate an officer.

The boy showed up and reported for duty at the Third District Police Station on Cottage Grove.

The boy, dressed in an official CPD uniform, was given an assignment.

Savvy enough to sign out a police radio and ticket book, the 14-year-old spent hours driving around the city on traffic duty before returning to the station where a senior officer realized there was something wrong with the young cop who said he was assigned to the third district just for the day from another district.

Turns out the 14-year-old was a former explorer, part of the community policing program, where young kids in the neighborhood interact with police.

The boy isn't being identified because he is a juvenile.

Police are still trying to figure out how the teen acquired the uniform.

Thats just crazy what kind of idiot would do this. I remember there was a Drug Dealer that had a full issued SWAT Uniform. When they busted him. Like how do you get this? It was an actual SWAT Uniform had his name and all turns out it got stolen from the cop but how that guy end up with it? :humm:

Galls.com is one of the biggest supplier of police equipment to civilians. There are a few others out there. Most of the time if you have the money to buy it, somebody will sell it. There are only a few items that you have to mail something in on Department letterhead to buy (i.e. badges..but they get around that as well)

Not sure how the desk SGT. didn't pick up on this kid only being 14, yea there are a few "younger looking" officers, but I don't think a 14 year old would pass daily inspection. Being that he was a former explorer, would explain how he knew to sign out the ticket books and radio's, but I wouldn't want to be the guy that handed that kid a set of key to a cruiser. They are lucky that the kid didn't get into an accident and seriously hurt someone.

Can't really blame the chief, since he really doesn't handle that kind of daily inspections, but I bet the Capts. and LT are getting there butts reamed.
