I change my own oil on my Dodge because, before anybody else drives my Dodge I have to put them through a 10 minute course on how to start it, how to shut it off, how to shift it, how not to shift it, how to never ever ever throw these switches, et cetera.

But on my Toyota, I just don't get why I would do it myself. Walmart or any Quick-lube place would do it for $30 and by the time I buy 6 quarts at $4 a quart and a $6 oil filter I've already spent that much. Then I have to spend just as much time doing it myself as I would've taking it to somebody else.

Why would anybody change there own oil anymore? I don't get it.

About $80 friggin dollars to have the oil changed on diesel trucks. Only difference on some of em is oil filter placement, a little more oil, and the color of the oil is a little more dark. Damn butt pirates anyway.

 

I change my own oil in my bike, but in my truck the dealership changes it. (I know the mechanic) I just pay for the parts, no labor.

 

i change the oil on all the tractors and gasser trucks. but on the TDI you need a speacial tool and speacial oil so i let the VW dealership worry about that. plus when i blew the engine in it because i get it changed at the dealership they couldnt pin it on me because i didnt change the oil. they had records saying i changed it at the right time. never blow a TDI engine they want 10 grand for a engine

 

I change my own oil on ALL my vehicles. Not so much for the price, but as Whitmore stated, I DO NOT trust anyone else to do it right. After all the horror stories that crop up on the forums from issues with the quick oil change places, I wouldn't even consider setting foot in one of those places. Not to mention the time it would take me do drive over there and wait for an oil change, I could have done it myself and inspected everything in the engine compartment thoroughly.

It took me about an hour from start to finish to change my oil today. '01 Toyota Tacoma, V-6, 4x4, manual. Cost $40 for 6 quarts of Pennzoil and a K&N filter.


You'd have to be damn good to do a change on that in the 15 or 20 minute flat rate. I have no idea how you're supposed to get to the filter. It's 45 degrees upside-down on the side of the block. You can't reach it from the top unless you're Manute Bol, and the only way you're getting a strap wrench on it is from the bottom with your elbow bent over your control arm. No way you're getting a strap wrench on from under it if it's up on a lift.

I use the K&N filters on it because they have the little nut on the bottom, so I can tighten and loosen the filter with a socket through the wheel well. But I can't pull the filter out through the wheel well, so the filter always falls down and bounces around until it's resting on the skid plate. So that always spills half a quart of oil on top of the skid plate, which then pours out all over the place.

I'm sure that the manual says to remove the bottom skid plate, which is at least a 10 minute R&R if you know what you're doing, since the front and rear skid plates interlock together.

So, you know what? Next time I'll take it to nearest hourly-paid Quick-Lube and let them make a mess. It's a totally stock vehicle, so I'm not worried about them messing it up too bad.

 

Took in my 01 when it was time for its first oil change - only took it in because it was 35 below and Id rather not work out side when its that cold.

I supplied the oil, filter etc. and said "change the oil - DONT touch anything else".

So, a few months later I went to change my air filter and found that they cracked my airbox.

That was a first and last trip to the quick change place. I can also do it as fast as they can.
