Heat Pump

I have Central Air and Heat , My Heat Pump (The Thing Out Side) started bouncing around and making one hell of a racket , I kicked it a few times and it pretty well calmed down , I went down town and paid $10 a peace for 5 40lb bags of salt :madd:, Came home and plowed and salted my driveway (Big Hill) got done and went back to the heat pump and it has smoke rolling out of it and the fans not turning .

How screwed am i ? could it just be the motor on this thing or am i going to get hosed big time when i call the HVAC guy ?

Does it ever end? :argh:

MRaynor 01-08-2009 01:00 PM

Your gonna get hosed. It is the motor in the fan, but you may have burnt up something else in the process if it was smoking like that. When mine did that, I got lucky and it was only the fan and motor, but it costed $650 to replace. :ouch:

You'll probably spend $650 on electricity heating your house in the Emergency Mode this week alone with a Heat Pump... the emergency mode isn't too energy friendly. :argh:

BTW, if this were me I would have to chalk this up as a "stupid redneck trick." I am good about doing these kinds of things.

I have a wood burner and the heat pump still kicks on once in a while ... not so much now that its roasted tho

Get the model number, hp, rotation direction and frame number off the fan motor and call up your local Grainger. You can fix it yourself but remember to turn the POWER OFF.:":

Heres a guy that knows what hes talking about.

DM, have you looked at it? is it just the motor? Replacing the motor should be pretty easy. Make sure you check for power before you pull the wiring off.

Jesus, I want a wood stove. I have the temp set at 65 because the electricity is so high and some rooms are only 58. Mikey has a space heater that shuts off at a certain temp. in his room. Oh and it is -10 right now outside.

Benjamin 01-08-2009 09:38 PM

i just cut the A/C on here... it's like 85 outside....:pca1:

i have a Grand Aire (sp) it is a lower end Carrier....

Wyatt Earp 11-13-2009 12:19 PM

DM,

There are a few issues here that need to be addressed. The compressor is likely shot as is the bearing. Mine was the same way as the previous home owner never once cleaned the furnance filter.

Anyway, I spent some serious $$ and replaced it all with a York Infinity 3T H/P and a 15kW VS fan element on the unit in the basement. I added a humidifier to it and the only complaint I still have is that it is only a single zone system which is a bit of PITA if you ask me.:pals:

handymanherb 11-13-2009 12:20 PM

Trane is not the best out there, but they think there are, a lot better and cheaper can be had if you don't buy the ad hipe, I have a jan-a-junk I bought 17 years ago, their compressor went out in week short of the warranty going out at 5 years, got a new compressor but had to pay to get it put in and put all the filters in the line, it didn't make it a year.

Had a bud of mine but someone else's compressor and has been running good for 11 years since
