ODB1 Codes, How Do I Read Them
 

I have a 95 Chevy Tracker that the check engine light is on and it's runnin like hell. I have a Chilton's manual and the little key that you use to do this with. I can't find any plugs that look like the one in the manual and no plugs I can find are giving me any codes.

I believe OBD1 came out in 94 - didnt it? Should be a plug for a code reader somewhere there...

Theres plugs under there. According to the manual, but I don't always trust these chilton's manuals either, you put a key with to prongs that stick out into the slots and the Check Engine light will blink in a pattern and that pattern tells you the trouble code. I have stuck this key in every place I can see to stick it, and i aint stickin it where i can't see before anybody get's the idea to tellme that.

Good luck, you are going to need it, the code will tell you area of problem, but not what or how to fix it.

I'm pretty sure it's the Mass Air Flow sensor the way it is acting, I just don't want to throw parts at it though.

Take the little key and attach 2 wires to the prongs....

Now take the 2 wires, and hold one on the positive, and one on the negative terminal of the battery.....

This wont tell you a thing about the codes but would be funny as hell if I was watchin ya....lol lol lol

I got a nasty habit of usin the battery for a tool bench, oh how many times I have jumped like a scalded rabbit when them wrenches cross terminals. It's a wonder I have never fried anything in the truck.

on the chevy vehicles, it should be right under the stearing column under the bottom of the dash. all the key you have is doing is grounding the diagnostic terminal on the plug. used to do it all the time using a paperclip. do a search on the internet about reading codes on chevys and you should find the info needed.

i was wrong. i looked on the internet and see that 95 was when they changed the aldl plug. but the plug should still be on the bottom of the dash in sight(not hidden) good luck
