What's the rules on shipping firearms sold in private purchase, no dealers involved. Do they still have to be shipped to a dealer or can I sell to another individual and ship them direct to them.

technically you can send them to an indivdual but the safest and legal-est way is take it to your local FFL holder, get the person buying it to find an FFL holder that will accept a transfer and get your FFL guy and his FFL guy to talk exchange numbers addresses etc and pay the 15-25 dollar fee to transfer it legally. AFAIK handguns HAVE to be sent next day air. long guns can be sent via ground shipment.


i use to manage a pawnshop and did many FFL transfers for customers who bought odd old rare guns off Gunbrokers.

if i ever sell to indivduals i try to deal Face To Face. i've sold out of state before and sold FTF. i personally have never sold anything of mine via an FFL transfer .....

That's me to. Sold and bought a lot of em in person but I was thinkin of advertisin a John Wayne Commemorative Rifle up for sale and that would probably be a long distance sale.

I'd make them come get it. Part of your responsibility is to determine if the purchaser is eligible to own a firearm.

A private individual can not legally ship to anyone except a dealer.

We have an FFL here that only charges $25 for the paperwork. I have heard horror stories about FFL's charging transfer fees plus 10% of sales price.

You don't know if the person you are selling to is a felon or not.

In a private sale, The onus is on them if they are a felon. It is not your responsibility to find out if they are a felon or not. As a felon, they know they are not allowed to be in possession of a firearm.

yep and in private sells, usually theres no paperwork involved period. unless its a class D or an automatic, then of course theres paper work for the fed. tax stamp. BTW, gunbroker is awesome but sometimes, some items are very overpriced. They also have a list of FFL dealers in your area. i lucked out, my dads one.:U:

One caviot on private sale, it is illegal to sell a pistol to anybody that does not reside in your state, but you can sell a rifle to somebody in another state face to face.

Pistols if not face to face in state sale must go through a FFL and a FFL must be used when shipping either pistols or rifles/shotguns via UPS & pistols MUST go by over night air.
