Warranty, warranty, warranty. Also, check out what features (RAM, processor, video, sound, screen size, battery cell size) each has. Find out if any of them have a back up OS disc and not some cheesy recovery discs, like ahem hm hm hm HP. Also, find out if they fixed the battery recall. Up to you, but find out about Toshiba. Ran two of em, and they were the shiz. No problems what so ever!!

DB Admin 12-15-2008 09:47 PM

$650 is the most Im going on this any more tips ?

Say no to Dell, I use a Toshiba at home. I have a couple of Sony's at the office and the wife uses a HP. Of all of them I like my Toshiba the best.

All that said, when this one crashes I am making the switch to an Apple.

TCBROWN 12-15-2008 10:38 PM

my wife uses a hp for work doing programing and she has not had any probs I'm not suer of the cost :humm:

My Uncle just sent his HP away - it was off warranty and they replaced the motherboard for free.

As far as I know HP is the same thing as Compaq = same company.

FWIW, when I got my laptop - I originally bought a Toshiba Satelight - pulled it out of the box and it had dead pixles. Pulled three more out of the boxes at the store and they ALL had dead pixles.

That being said, my HP has a dead DVD drive and Ive probably burned 2 disks and read from maybe 10 others. They dont make laptops like they used to. The ones you get today are disposables (just like everything else).

As far as I can tell, the overheating issues are from the laptops that have the NVIDIA chip in them (discrete graphics) and not anything with either an Intel or AMD chip in it. I have had a few HP laptops over the years, and have been overall satisfied with them.

Haven't had a problem with the DELL xps I had and it endured 3 years on a ship. Now that it's getting old I'm thinking about a Toshiba or HP only because they seem to be priced better for the features. The only one I know to stay away from is Acer we have them at work and there's constantly something wrong with one of them.

scottsjeeprolet 12-16-2008 10:53 AM

I have 2 HP 17" laptops and they work good. The extended warranty is worth it's weight in gold.
Try to get one with XP and not Vista:puke:

HP - Laptop with AMD Turion™ X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor RM-70 - G60-125nr

wildbill 12-16-2008 12:22 PM

It come with an OS cd, just in case you need to reinstall? Other than that, looks like a nice machine.

DIESELDENT 12-16-2008 12:27 PM

nice :U:

DB Admin 12-16-2008 12:35 PM

thanks i havent looked in the box yet :D

i read one of the reviews and it said you have to burn your own back up disk ?

its going to take sometime to get use to this thing ive never had a laptop before

seems to be pretty cool :U:

wildbill 12-16-2008 12:43 PM

IDK, but I think you can only do 1 backup disc and that's it. So if it's the only way to reinstall/repair the system and it fails along the way, your stuck in the mud.

Oilfield_Mafia 12-16-2008 12:58 PM

Im with Aaron here.. Ive had alot of laptops of all brands.. Toshiba, Dells (for work, I would never buy one) HP's, Compaq's, and a couple Sonys... out of them all the Toshiba was always the most reliable..

With HP, they are a great machine, but I dont like the recovery disc setup they have going..

DM.. BE SURE TO MAKE THOSE RECOVERY DISCS ASAP!!! and put them in a safe place where they cant be messed with and scratched..

and when my HP's and Toshiba and Sony dies this time.. Im going Apple..

Its a little known fact, but there are only a HANDFUL of viruses/adware/malware/spywares written for the Mac OS.. on the other hand, there are THOUSANDS written daily for windows based machines.. Linux is much more stable, its fluid, smoother, faster and more efficient.

DB Admin 12-16-2008 01:10 PM

The apples are a lot of $$ too ,

As for the back up , no disk but there a paper that says

your computer includes a new system recovery feature that does not require cd's or dvd's , if you need to repair your system you can do it from your hard drive

wildbill 12-16-2008 01:14 PM

What happens when you have to reformat the hard drive because of malicious code or the recover doesn't grab hold? Seems like your only defense is a backup disc.

DB Admin 12-16-2008 01:15 PM

its walks me threw a back up disk as well im going to make one now

I bought an Acer Aspire 3680 about a year ago for about $450 after rebates, and I am happy with it... Nothing special, but it gets the job done, and I haven't had any issues with it.
