The best advice I have is to take the VIN to a dealer and have them generate a VIS report, it will not show accidents and stuff, but you will have a good idea of what kind of truck it is.

As far as Carfax, are you buying it from a dealer? If so then they should provide the report, also if you are not, ask the individual you are buying it from to get the report for you... If they are secure in the fact that the vehicle is sound then they should not complain.
