New Shop...

Ok, anybody got any comments about the "Size" shop I will need? I am putting one up at the house to do my own upgrades, store Mrs, BigDaddy's Holiday Decorations, Lawn Equipment, do the occasional work on a friends truck.....
this is the building I am looking at, and I am considering a 20X26 with a concrete floor.
Any comments???

BIGGER , You will always want it BIGGER go as Big as you can now or regret it later :ouch:

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 07:01 PM

Well, that is kinda what I was thinkin'...
But with 20X26 , and 25 ft high I was thinking that wight be big enough for what I need.?.?.?:w2::pca1:

busta 09-05-2008 07:04 PM

bigger x2 :U::U:

stkdram55 09-05-2008 07:07 PM

i think i would go at least 30x30 and a 14ft door like on big rig shops that way lifted trucks wont be a problem and you will have ALOT of room for the mrs stuff:argh: and your important stuff ie trucks, truck parts, lawn mower, tools and more truck parts:rocking:

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 07:15 PM

10-4, I was not exactly thinking about the lifted trucks...
But, you are right about one thing, after the Mrs. gets a hold on the storage idea, I may not have NEAR the room I thought I would:argh::argh:

Shop is the cheap part!! Concrete is what's going to eat your lunch.:ouch::ouch::ouch:

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 07:24 PM

Well, for 20X26 a place nearby said $1450 but for 30X30, I am guessing about $2000...
Sound about right???:pca1:

MORE!

taller with loft style storage as an option, or a furnished appartment up there to draw income.

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 07:29 PM

:w2: I don't know about that, I can hardly stand having neighbors that live close, I don't thinkl that I could handle someone actually living on my property!!!:booo::argh:

I designed my house when i built it with my dad , Started with a blank piece of paper , and jamb packed cool stuff in it , cathedral ceilings , a window in every exterior room , Sky Lights in middle rooms , Den in the basement Where im at now , Used Floor trusses on this part so i didnt have any poles , Wet bar , Full bathroom down here , And i used every sort of material i could , Carpet , Tile , Lanolium , Drawwall , Panneling ect ect... to have a little of each , Wish i would of went with hard wood floors and the soft berber carpet , The only part we didnt do was the dry wall , i paid out the ass for a professional and we could of done better blind folded :madd:

My Dad broke his leg and lived in my den for a few weeks , there a fridge and everything down here , my plan is to stick chase down here when hes in his teens and he can have his own place and come and go as he pleases (And keep the wood burner stoked thats in here as well or freeze his ass off) bwhahahaha

Any way As per my design the garage had to be the same size as the living room for the house to be symmetric , So my garage is not as big as i would like , i can get my truck and 3 fourwheelers in there but thats about it , and i have to actually hit the back wall to get the door closed and back in or ill have to crawl out the pass side :argh:

I wish it was 10 feet bigger ATW around but then my living room would be huge

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 07:45 PM

I hear ya there!:U::pca1:

stkdram55 09-05-2008 07:46 PM

yeah concrete is what like 100 bucks a sq. yard isnt it??

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 07:52 PM

I am not sure what it is per yard, but, @ 20X26,with a 25ft loft style peak, I wm thinking that I will have just enough room for my tools, my lift((two Post)) , and an oil buring heater from side to side, and enough room in the back for my desk, a cot, and a fridge. Beyond that I would just need a generator and an air compressor, and they could go into an outside shed to the side of it. But, then 25X25X25 would probably fit my needs for now, and with steel, you can always add on later...:U:

stkdram55 09-05-2008 07:54 PM

A cot?? Man your prepared, i like your style...:U:

wildbill 09-05-2008 07:56 PM

I believe they figure it by the cubic yard. It's going to take aprox 451 cu yds of concrete if the pad is 6" thick. I think!!!

stkdram55 09-05-2008 07:58 PM

thats ALOT thats gonna be $$$$$$$$$$$$$:argh:

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 08:02 PM

No way!!! they said when they came out that they could do it 5" thick at one end and 8 at the other"because of the slope" and it would only be about 26 yards... Granted, that is for 20X26 pad. but 451??? There is no way!!! not at $100 per...that is like $45,000
I think not!!!

stkdram55 09-05-2008 08:06 PM

yeah i dont think it will be that much concrete that would suck :se:

wildbill 09-05-2008 08:06 PM

I'm not good at converting sq ft to yards, as you can tell.

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 08:22 PM

:w2:yeah me either... But seriously, the quote I got for 20X26 was for $1500, but for 30X30 I am thinking like $2-2500, or so... The shop @ 30X30 should be right at $8000...
So $10K out the door, should be about right... it better be anyway, this is only going to be a backyard shop, and I do not want to build a Monster...If you know what I mean...:w2::pca1:

DB Admin 09-05-2008 08:44 PM

Did you see whitmores thread How To Build a Shop in ?? Days?

bigdaddydiesel 09-05-2008 09:39 PM

No, I didn't, where exactly is it? in the same section?:humm:
