im thinking about getting one. i have never rode one before. what is a good m/c to learn how to ride on. what size, type.

hey ed, what kind of riding do you want to end up doing? are you wanting to look for more of a cruiser or a sport bike? how much do you weigh?

for me, the only reason I bought a sport/touring bike is because I've got the mountains or coastal foothills that make weekend rides on the twisties a lot of fun. otherwise I should have gotten a cruiser for tooling around town and commuting to work.

the main thing for getting your first bike is get something used as the odds are astronomically high that you're going to drop it in the 1st 6 months.

Dont ride motorcycles but had my fair share of dirt bikes and have worked with alot of guys that rode and the one thing i kept hearing the most is get at least a 600cc if you dont they said you will not be able to get away from the semi's, and you want, the Yamaha V Stars are good its a little bigger of a bike but nice bike or you could go get a 883 or 1200 sportster good learner bike

not knowing you or what you like or what you plan on doing hard to recommend a specific bike.

I have 2 yamaha r6's and a cbr 900 modified into a stunt bike. personally i would never get a cruiser not my bag.

recommendations, get a bike you like, many say go used and small to learn, but if u dont have the funds to replace u may end up having a bike u hate for a while. Keep in mind if u do wreck it you have to be able to affors repairs/replacement etc. optherwise u'll be caging it again

Anybike, even a moped can killl u quicker than u can blink, what ever u get, take ur time, learn its limits slowly and enjoy urself... keep the shiny side up :U:

my first bike was a gsxr-750, it was 'technically' too much for a first bike but I've found the same to be true with the newer, faster 600rr and now a 1000cc sport bike...they all go the same slow speed if you just barely crack open the throttle...

if you're looking at cruisers, the Yam Vstar and Honda Shadows are both good, common bikes that are relatively inexpensive. My roommate has a Shadow 750, it's a great bike.

If you want a badass American bike, look at the Victory line(not inexpensive starter bikes, by the way!)

that being my point, most people say u will kill urself on any modern sportbike, i say if ur an idiot u will killl yourself on anything, go slow regardless of what you end up buying

as a side note go to a motorcycle website like r1forum.com, search the forum for threads about a good first bike, u will see lots of opinions, but dont post a new thread asking its been done a million times and u'll get the same answers if u search

if i were you and you are serious about getting a bike go and take a safety class that way you will get some experience on a bike that if its dropped it won't matter and the instructor will be able to help you figure out how to ride better. my first real bike is the one i have now it is a honda VTX 1800 it is a big bike but i have been riding dirt bikes for close to 8 years so i had a basic understanding of riding and i am not afraid of my bike. The people that i see get into accidents with big bikes is because they were scared of the bike. My gf works with a lady that is only like 120lbs maybe and she rides a bike just as big as mine. Like everyone has said any bike can kill you and as long as you are comfortable on your bike you will have a less of a chance then one you are afraid to drive.
