Very Fortunate

The night before last there was a terrible accident that 4 of my daughters friends were in. All 16-17 yr old girls. They were t-boned by a truck and all 4 were med flighted to a hospital in Madison. One is paralyzed from the waist down one is still unconscious (induced coma now) 3 of them have broken pelvis's broken collar bones and punctured lungs. 2 of the girls are sisters and the only children of the family. Just a terrible thing for these young girls and their family's. My daughter was supposed to be with them but got called into work for someone who called in sick. She is having a real tough time dealing with this. I wish I knew what I could say or do. It tears me up seeing her like this but at the same time I can't Imagine what the other family's are going through right now. We went to Madison yesterday so my daughter could see them. They are all in intensive care but she was able to go in and see them. Pretty tough time when you know all the girls and parents involved. I'm feeling very fortunate today.

WOW! They'll be in my thoughts and prayers. This was tough to read.

All you can do is hold your daughter and let her know you're listening and that you love her. Help her count her blessings when she's reading.

Oh man.. I hate to hear stuff like this.. Its so sad when we realize just how fast life can end.. or change dramatically.. Our thoughts and prayers are definately with the families.. you and your daughter are very fortunate for sure Jazz..

wildbill 07-11-2008 09:35 AM

Yes, yes, very fortunate. Thoughts and prayers are with the families here also.

Woody35 07-11-2008 09:39 AM

i will pray for there families. that is sad and remind your daughter to not fell guilty just because she wasnt with them.

being that I've been on the receiving end of a major accident, their families will need a fair amount of support. nothing really major, just helping out with little things like dropping off dinner for them, cleaning the house or whatever. and it's kinda fortunate that your daughter wasn't in on it, hopefully she'll be able to help out with taking care of the other 4.

especially for the family with two girls, if the mom works she should be able to file for temporary disability for a month or so to take care of them.

it would be good for the people that know the girls best (their parents and your daughter come to mind...) to pay close attention to how they act/think when the trauma and pain killers begin to subside. Traumatic Brain Injury Resource Guide is an absolutely outstanding brain injury resource, I spent a lot of time on their website and did several months of outpatient rehab with them for my closed head injury that the hospital didn't even catch; it made a world of difference. even mild brain injuries/concussions have an amazingly detrimental impact that is often overlooked...hopefully the guy has decent insurance, the neuroskills place would be a good place for them to go for some short term in-patient rehab!

well, glad for you that your girl is okay, can't imagine all that from a parents' perspective.

Jazz , im so sorry to hear this news, and so glad to hear your baby girl wasnt invovles in it, my heart goes out the the family of these other girls,, I just couldnt deal with that with any of my kids, parents biggest fear right.....i have one question though.. how come there where 4 girls in the car? the law here wont allow any New drivers to carry more then one passenger under the age of 19, unless they are related..whats your law there?

Jazz 07-11-2008 11:52 AM

Well I just learned that there were 6 people in the car. 2 boys also. 6 people in a dodge neon.:booo: The law here is 1 person until you have had a license for 6 months I think. Unless it's family members.

wildbill 07-11-2008 11:57 AM

Getting a ride home or out for a joy ride?

ooh, that's going to be insurance mayhem for a few years. and sucks a lot for the family of the girl driving as far as liability goes...

dmaxjenn 07-11-2008 12:38 PM

wel i hope they all make it, sending angels to watch over them ..... I didnt think the law was that different, We freaked if dev carries one other person in his truck beside his gf unless its his bro, we used to make the other one walk or wait till he dropped the other girl off.......thats the law!
Why do kids think they can get away with that.. are the boys ok? in a dodge neon,, gee thats a tiny car.. howd they all fit.

Especially at her age when girls seem to be at their most emotional stage of life this is a horrible thing for her to have to experience. Be sure to have some professional counseling all lined up and ready to go when she's ready for it. Don't wait until then to start lookin for the right place cause she's gonna need it. Grief counseling an survivor guilt counseling is all gonna come into play here.

Shes also gonna need to spend a lot of time with the families and going through the grieving process with them.

redneckbuckeye 07-11-2008 01:13 PM

Man that justy horible for the families involved, glad your daughter was spared bodliy harm in this incident, and I pray she will be fine sicologically, and for the fast heeling of her friends broken bodies.

Dr. Evil 07-11-2008 01:31 PM

Amazing how something like getting called into work can change the course of your life forever. What a terrible thing. Wishing everyone involved the best. I hope they will be ok.

Hope you bought yourself a lottery ticket buddy - that was a lucky day.

Wyatt Earp 07-11-2008 01:51 PM

No kidding, lucky day is right.

Jazz, I can't tell you what to do but after some time goes by it may be good to have a heart to heart about right and wrong when it comes to getting into a car. Even if her friends are doing it... Clearly, she's very lucky.:humm:

Godspeed to those in the hospital.

Go get a lotto ticket...

Jazz 07-11-2008 03:47 PM

Well my daughter just got home and filled me in on what really happened. The girls were at Blackhawk Lake for a day of swimming and laying on the beach. On the way home their car broke down so the 2 guys stopped to help (they knew the 2 guys) they offered them a ride home and that is how they all ended up in 1 car. The 2 guy's were treated and released from the hospital today. 3 of the girls are still in intensive care

greasemonkey 07-18-2008 02:57 PM

hey are those other three girls out of ICU yet? hopefully they're all recovering okay!!
